Through The Detroit Jewish Chronicle

REMOVED

President, University of Detroit

Painlessly and Permanently
by the Electric Needle

It is not a Christian or Catholic characteristic
to sow suspicion or animosity towards others
because of purely accidental circumstances like
nationality, race, or inherited customs and beliefs.
Naturalism, often under the guise of religion, is
the root of racial hatreds. We are all children
of one Father, and that common Paternity is ample
ground for a respectful attitude towards every
member of the human family. This is not a mere
kindly philosophy; it is a divine commandment.
It is a teaching of the Catholic Church that God
loves and gives His grace to all who, sincerely
and to the best of their lights, worship Him and
try to do IIis will. It seems to me that regard
for this truth is the only remedy, in this country
or any other country, for the conflicts which are
always rising on account of racial, social, or
religious differences.

rabbi and Jewish lay leader should
read, "The Clue to History," by
John MacMurray, a London Uni-
versity teacher. I quote a few
lines of his reply to that puzzling
query. In the conviction that it
posits the hope that the success
of Caesars who deny freedom,
equality and love, is temporary.
"In rejecting freedom Man re-
jects himself, negates himself—the
rejection sets him in opposition to
reality, isolates him from reality.
But this cannot change his nature.
Ile is a part of reality and must
act as a person deliberately. What
follows? He becomes a divided be-
ing. Ile tries to be above reality,
and he sinks below it. Ile seeks
to be master, and achieves his own
slavery. He exalts himself and is
abased. Ile justifies himself and
in the act condemns himself. Try-
ing to save his life, he loses it."
(The Clue to History, Harper &
Bros., N. Y., 1939, p. 104).
Let the Jews be on the aide of
God, and in the long run nothing
will prevail against the values for
which they stand.

Zionist History

Avukah Publishes Able Resume
by Shoshanna Harri s
Saokowsky

Avukah, American student Zi-
onist federation, 111 Fifth Ave.,
New York, has added a splendid
brochure to its publications in
the form of a "Short History of
Zionism" by Shoshanna Harris
Sankowsky (50c). The cover and
the pictorial statistics were pre-
pared by Itzhak Sankowsky.
Although it is merely an out-
line of Zionist history—including
the bibliographical references it
has only 88 pages—this brief his-
tory has great merit because it
covers all the vital points in
Zionist development. For the
student who desires to do fur-
ther research, the suggested def-
erence readings are of value.
Commencing with an explana-
tion of the background that led
to Zionist political action, and
developing the growth of the
Zionist ideas and theories as
enunciated by Pinsker, Hess and
Ahad Ila'Am, this pamphlet ex-
plains the colonization activities,
gives an excellent outline of
Zionist institutions and ably pre-
sents the progress of Zionist col-
onization since the Balfour Dec-
laration.

In Tunisia and Morocco, which
are autonomous countries under
French protectorate, the Jews
maintain their own law courts
where civil suits are judged by
tribunals of their own.

My message to the Jews of
America at this Holy Season is
that they maintain steadfastly
and advance courageously the prin-
ciples of Judaism.
This means that daily duties
will be performed in a religious
spirit, for Judaism does not sep-
arate life from religion. By the
same token, every so-called reli-
gious experience of a Jew will have
immediate and direct reference to
our common practical American
life, and positively make for its
improvement.
This means also that a Jew
reckons the significance of life in
terms of his conviction that Gel
is at work to create as time pro-
gresses a world community. This
community, to the Jew, will not be
based on blood (although kin feel-
ings will have a place) or soil
(although in national loyalties he
will be an American first) no much
as on a common humanity. The
Great Society of all peoples, of
which religious Jews dream, has
equality and freedom as its struc-
tural principles, and these God is
developing everywhere through
Jews and all other sons and daugh-
ters of man who will cooperate
with Him. Equality and freedom
are concerns of the faithful Jew
which have to do with relations
in a garment factory as truly as
within the home; with politics as
well as within the synagogue;
with migratory workers as well as
with the privileged. The faithful
Jew believes the democratic meth-
od to be as valid in economics as
in politics.
But what about the enemies of
freedom and equality—must a
faithful Jew love in this sense
an exploiter of labor? An invader
of China? An oppressor of Ne-
groes? A baiter of Catholics? An
inquistitor of Protestants? Even
a radio defamer of Jews? A politi-
cal persecutor of Jews?
The answer is yes. Love trans-
lated into understanding becomes
a scientific approach to every prob-
lem and involves study, analysis,
communication, negotiation, arbi-
tration, and finally, reconcilia.
tion. Moreover, love is a titanic
spiritual force of redemption which,
when we use it sincerely, patiently
and earnestly, tends to change our
enemies, Love is the essence of
God.
I close this New Year's message
to the Jews by recognizing a re-
maining problem. It is this: What
if a ruler or political party con-
trolling a people reject the values
of equality and freedom, and the
earnest of love?
I The answer is given at length
in an important book which every
