This Rosh Ilashonah marks not only the turning of
the year but of a century. Were we living in a normal
world, instead of in a world in turmoil, the likelihood is
that the Jewry of all lands would join in joyous cele-
bration of the occasion, and review with pride the contri-
butions which have been made by our people to civiliza-
tion and the general culture of mankind.
But alas, ours is not a normal world, and the posi-
tion of the Jew, as we are all keenly aware, is pitiful in
the extreme. Organized hatred has made him its vic-
tim. The very countries to whose upbuilding he has
contributed more than others, whose art and literature
and music and science, his genius has enriched, have
spewed him out like so much vermin. He has become
the pariah among nations. He wanders the highways
and the by-ways, a veritable Wandering Jew, and he
roams the seas, scarcely daring to hope that some friendly
port will be ready to receive him.
Under such conditions who shall wonder that the
Jew has lost his courage and that he has yielded to
the morally destructive philosophy of the defeatist?
Why be surprised that in some cases the faith that sus-
tained his fathers when all seemed lost to them, has
lost its hold upon him, so that he believes that the end
is at hand for the Jew?
It is just because the temptation is great upon our
people to give up the battle for survival and to acknowl-
edge themselves defeated, that I believe it is incumbent
upon our rabbis and our lay leaders more than ever
heretofore, to rehearse in the ears of the mass the
heroic story of Israel, and without chauvinism or undue
self-praise to point out that in our long and heroic his-
tory, times without number the hand of God has shown
itself not to be too short to save. That faith must be
re-established in the Jew. If we believe ourselves de-
feated, we are defeated. If, like the ten spies of the
Scripture story we appear as grasshoppers in our own
eyes, we shall seem to be no more than that in the
sight of those who would destroy us.
To these things we must hold fast: to our self-
respect; to the belief that with the destruction of the
Jew civilization would perish; to the confidence that
to the majority of men might is not right and that
ultimately justice shall prevail among men and nations;
and above all to our unwavering faith in the saving
power of Israel's God.
The new century in Jewish history dawns upon a
war-torn, sorrowing, suffering world. It is the prayer
of the Jew that long ere it shall have run its course
sanity may have been restored to the nations now ruled
by madmen and that good will and sympathy and un-
derstanding may again reign supreme in the hearts of
men and peoples.

Your gracious letter of August 21st at hand and
I wish to assure you of nay deep appreciation for the
generous space allotted in your editorial comment about
our hope to give aid to those who may be allowed to
come from Germany.
I feel sure that anyone who has read the Sermon
on the Mount and has reflected upon it will be as in-
terested in the welfare of these children as I should
like to be. Having been a student of the penal laws
for many years, I can thoroughly understand what must
have been the feelings of my forefathers when they
were dispersed throughout the world by laws as un-
just as those now being perpetrated in Germany.
With best wishes for the happy solution of the
difficulties that encompass your people because of racial
hatred, I beg to remain

of untold difficulties, the father
found asylum in Great Britain.

employment, Dr. Eugen under-
took frantic efforts to have his
boy brought to hint. Ile appealed
to the Jews Temporary Shelter
in London and to the British
agency for the care of children
from Germany. Both agencies
contacted the Warsaw office of
the IIIAS-ICA which took Dan-
iel under its care and arranged
for his passage via Gdynia on
June 30, and arrived in Dover
on July 4. His third birthday he
spent on the high seas.
