IN THE NEW K. OF P. An evaluation of the treatment of Jewish characters in contem- porary drama is presented in a pamphlet, The American Drama presents the Jew" by Joseph Mersand, Ph. D., published by The Modern Chapbooks, 284 Montauk Ave., Brooklyn, N. Y. Pointing out that ''the por- trayal of Jewish characters in drama can often nerve as an index of a nation's attitude to its Jewish population," Dr. Mer- sand presents a birdseye view of the manner in which the Jew has been treated by dramatists during the past 300 years. Ile contrasts Mrs. Susanna Rawson's "Slaves in Algiers" (1794) in which the Jew was painted as a scoundrel with Lessing's "Na- than the Wise," the first major play in the world's dramatic lit- erature to present a noble por- trait of a Jew." Richard Cumber- land's "The Jew" (1793) he calls "the first favorable dramatic treatment by an English drama- tist." More numerous and more varied portraits appeared on the American stage as soon as the traditional defamation of the Jew lost its appeal, Dr. Mersand writes, but old hostilities arose again after the depression of 1929. The works of Odets, Rice, Wesley and others are described to show the role in which the Jew is presented as educator, as attorney, in the economic field, an physician, as entertainer. as radical, as philosopher, as moth- er, as man of courage. lie con- cludes by stating: "The history of the Jew on the recent American stage is truly one of emancipation . . . No longer is he the comic figure with red beard, hooked nose and gabardine .. Rothschild's words have come true of the Jew of the American stage, for he has learned to 'live with dignity, to walk with dignity, to die with dignity.'" A well-known 16th century Rabbi begins his last will and testament by saying: "Some in- herit and bequeath wealth . . . I have nothing to offer but a rule of righteousness and guid- ance in the fear of God." In his introduction he also mentions the well-known parable of the Three Friends (Money, Relatives and Worthy Deeds) the last of which alone accompanies the dying man to the grave. INSPIRING MORE THAN TOLERATION A Message Written for Readers of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle by Eminent Member of Parliament By JOSIAH'C. WEDGWOOD The status of the Jewish people in the world today is deplorable. Improvement depends solely on Palestine. If the Zionists can defeat the White Paper and get more Jews in illegally than they were permitted to do legally, —if they can get land by purchase acquired illegally, and use it—then they will show a strength no one expects of them today and become respected by all—especially by English-speaking people, who naturally put the laws of God above the laws of man. Self-sacrifice, unity, suc- cess, all inspire something more than ,toleration. A New Year Message to the Jews of Michigan Through The Detroit Jewish Chronicle By THE HON. LUREN D. DICKINSON Governor of Michigan This age, torn by strife and the unfortunate spread of hatred and race prejudice, needs true religious ob- servance and spiritual living as a tonic and a cure for the despairing minds of all peoples. As Americans, we are especially obligated to perpetuate our ideals of racial and religious tolerance, and to create guarantees for the well being of all our people. As an observing Christian, I am especially disturbed over the sad plight of the Jews of the world. It is a sad state of affairs when bigotry gets the upper hand and intolerance threatens to undermine the feelings of brotherhood and good will. These intolerant attitudes of the old world must not invade American ranks. Our institutions and the foundations for American liberty must be preserved. On the occasion of the New Year of the Jewish people, I wish to extend my sincerest greetings to the Jews of Michigan and to express the hope that inde- cencies will not gain a foothold on this land of freedom. We must strive together—Christians and Jews—to keep America free and to help make our people happy. May this New Year on the Jewish calendar mark the beginning of an era of kindness and tolerance and unyielding equality. I pray with my Jewish friends that God, the Father of all mankina, may grant peace and joy to all peoples. Into the sanctuary will Israel bring his apprehesensions and fears and sor- rows. The old prayers for mercy and divine aid will as- sume greater immediacy and vividness than ever before in our time. May we carry back into our daily lives from the communion with the God of our fathers and with the tradition and spirit of our people, renewed faith and increased hope. Let us remember that justice and truth are the objects of the attack, whose immediate victim is the Jew. It is against the throne of God that the shafts which pierce Israel are directed. It is decency and right which suffer when we suffer. The Jew's humiliation is the shame of humanity, and his degradation symbolizes the defeat of nobility and goodness. It is not a disgrace, but an honor to suffer in such a cause. The hope which is ours is born of our faith in the inevitable triumph of right over wrong. Israel's destiny places him in the very forefront of this great war against injustice. May we ever bear in mind the words spoken to the Jewish host in ancient days, when it went forth to do battle: "Hear 0 Israel ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies, let not your heart faint; fear not, nor be alarmed, neither be ye affrighted at them. For the Lord your God is He that goeth with you to fight for you against your enemies, to save you." ELIZABETH RAndolph 3290 NEW YORK.—In a report anal- yzing 250 answers to a question- naire, Junior Hadassah, the Young Women's Zionist Organization of America, attributed a "resur- gence of active interest in the Zionist movement on the part of American Jewish youth" to a hatred of Nazi-Fascist aggression and its attendant anti-Semitism, a feeling that Jews must make a vigorous collective effort for the defense of Jewish rights and a consciousness that Jewish sur- vival, including the rebuilding of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, is bound up with democratic ideas. The answers represent the opin- ions of nearly 20,000 Jewish young women, who were consulted by Junior liadassah leaders at a series of conferences held in 42 states, according to Miss Sylvia Graff and Miss Esther Novick, Junior Hadassah membership chairmen. who conducted the countryside survey. A New Year Message Last year, the year 5699, was one of the most disas- trous years of Jewish history. For this very reason we must look forward to the New Year which, according to the Jewish calendar, marks the beginning of the new century, 5700, as the opening of a new and brighter era, At Munich last fall the whole civilized world seemed to have surrendered to the man who is character- ized above all else as the enemy of the Jew. Later in the year and as part of that surrender, Great Britain, whom we had considered one of the Jew's greatest friends among the nations, violated her sacred word to facilitate the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. In the past year, too, anti-Semitism made its appear- ance in America in a more definite and dangerous form than we had ever known. The infamous radio priest veri- tably filled the air of America with the agitation of hatred against the Jew. Yet the fact stands out that all these accumulations of disaster found us strong in faith and united in spirit and therefore able to cope with our misfortunes. We gave sacrificially to relieve the most distressed of our brethren. We refused to bow our heads to the I enemy, but resisted, and replied to all of his attacks. We I maintained discipline in our own ranks and defended our good name and our rights with courage and dignity. Once more it has become obvious that the enemies l of the Jew are the enemies of mankind. He who began his public career with a war against the Jew is now threatening war against all civilization. As Rabbi in Israel, I call upon my people to hold fast to their faith, to keep their courage despite repeated disappointments, to maintain a united front against the common enemy, and to look forward to the New Year and to the new century for the inevitable rebound of the spirit of mankind toward freedom, humaneness and peace.
