Thanks to The Detroit Jewish Chronicle, I am able once more to present my compliments to its readers upon the important occasion of the Jewish New Year. These are desperately significant times for 16,- 000,000 Jews all around the world. Once more they confront the age-old curse of an oppression which has intermittently pursued them through the ages. But once more they will finally demonstrate the fundamental age-old ethnic truth that Judaism is indestructible. It could not be otherwise in the light of history. The tenacity of a tremendous tradition ,will survive, as always, and only the warped Vision of little minds will expect other- wise. The world's problem is to face this reality and to cope with it in constructive, sympathetic fash- ion. The symbol of Jewish hope is the Jewish national home in Palestine. Every effort of every civilized government should encourage and sus- tain this mighty adventure in the repatriation of a noble race. My wish for the Jewish New Year would be that 1940 may see new strength and new vitality added unto this shrine in Palestine. Here in America—thanks be to the common bond of all races and all religions and all creeds— we are still free of the oppression and the outrage which marks man's inhumanity to man elsewhere on this troubled globe. Ever since Jacob Barsimon first emigrated to these friendly shores—down through the battles for our independence, so richly endowed by Haym Salomon—the American Jew and the Americanized Jew have played their great, patriotic part in the evolution of the Repub- lic; and they have earned the reward of a great, christian tolerance from their neighbors and their fellow-citizens. It is not only the essence of our Bill of Rights; it is also the supreme characteristic of our free people. Our FREE people! Free in religion, race, creed, speech, press, ballot, property and person! President, Common Council of the City of Detroit The persecution of any race or group of people, large or small, because of color, racial, language or religious differences, is the most discouraging thing that can happen to the people of the world. Christianity, or for that matter, civilization has main- tained for hundreds of years the by-word "peace on earth, good will towards men." If this is to be but an empty phrase, then the outlook for mankind is dark. If intolerance is to be the "motif" of the hour, then a great deal of blood has been shed through the centuries in vain. For example, this country was conceived on the theory that all people were welcome to its shores, regardless of their religious, political or social beliefs, and regardless of their color, language or facial ex- pression. In fact, the United States Constitution and all of the State Constitutions guarantee freedom of religious worship. To persecute or discriminate against any group within the country, or for that matter, the world, be- cause of these differences is to throw over all that our forbears fought and bled for, and to admit that so called civilization is a mockery. I don't believe that mankind is cruel and vicious. Consequently, I think that the wave of intolerance which threatens to sweep the world is a mob psychological reaction brought about by the de- pressed economic conditions, and the resulting individual worries. I predict that, unless our economic problems are ! righted in the relatively near future, the advancement of civilization will stop, and people will slip back to an era in which intolerance, mistrust, cruelty and vicious- ! ness will be the theme of the day. Society will become bitterly disagreeable and easily pushed off balance, just as individuals become who are struggling desperately to make both ends meet.
