May You All Be Inscribed in the Book of Life for
a Year Replete With Good Health, Happiness,
Prosperity and Contentment.

—BILL BOESKY
—JOE FREEDMAN

The old year with its indescrib-
able horrors, its anguish and de-
struction of our people is passing.
What the new year holds in store
for us we cannot foresee. Our
position in this world of ours has
fallen to a deplorable state. There
is no need to repeat the woes and
tragedies of Jewry, for every Jew
with the slightest interest in the
welfare of his people knows the
terrible record of past events, and
what is happening now as these
words are read. Even in this
country the combined forces of
bigotry, ignorance and lust for
power are gathering momentum.
However, despite all our trag-
edies, despite the barbaric perse-
cution inflicted on Jews in east-
ern and central Europe, despite
the widespread and increasing an-
ti-Semitism in all parts of the
world, including our own coun-
try, there are nevertheless oppor-
tunities to better our condition
and improve our position especially
here. But this is possible only
if we act with courage and dig-
nity to defend our just claims,
whether they be in Nazi Germany,
in Palestine, or in this country.
This is no time for self-commis-
eration nor the quest for sympathy
from non-Jewish groups. The
world respects only those who have
the courage to statd up for their
rights. Expressions of fine sen-

timent alone will not suffice. Jus-
tke is accorded only to those who
ere willing to fight for it. Our
great need today is a leadership
that will submerge personal likes
or dislikes and individual philoso-
phies for the good of all Jewry.
Surely there can and must be
unity in Israel on at least one
common ground—the fight against
persecution and the right of
equality wherever Jews may live.
Equally important we need a
stronger spirit of co-operation
among all classes of Jews. Ob-
viously leaders can accomplish lit-
tie without support from their fol-
lowers. So in this hour of stress
and travail we must unite in a
spirit of brotherly co-operation.
Let us insist on a program of
definite, vigorous action on the
part of our leaders, with the full-
est support of all Jews, and let
us face our enemies here and
abroad with the same determina-
tion and courage of our glorious
ancestors, the Maccabees of old.
Never before in our history has
the necessity been so urgent for
united, unselfish, courageous ac-
tion by all Jewry. It should be
the prayer of oil Jews that this
New Year may witness greater
unity and better understanding to
the end that Jewry everywhere
will find renewed vigor and
strength toward their salvation.

HOPE AND RESPONSIBILITY

LOS ANGELES. —The other
day I had the pleasure of meet-
ing one of motion picture's top
men. His name is Peltier Buch-
ner. In his early teens, Mr.
Buchner was known as the
greatest living boy chazon." To-
day, Mr. Buchner is considered
one of the outstanding Jewish
leaders in this part of the coun-
try. After speaking with him for
an hour I can understand why
both statements are true. Cantor
Buchner, as he prefers to be
called, is the head of the re-
search department at Warner
Brothers First National Studios.
Ills work consists of obtaining
all of the correct data concern-
ing any pictures. Above all of
this, however, Mr. Buchner has
been a great influence in the
motion picture business and also
in the lives of many who are
associated with it.
Harry Warner, president of
Warner Brothers, has always
been interested in producing pic-
tures on the order of "The Life
of Louis Pasteur," "The Life of
Emil Zola" and others, but hesi-
tated because he lacked confi-
dence that his personnel could
handle such a task. It was Mr.
Buchner who swayed the broth-
era to produce these two pic-
tures, and he also instigated the
theme of "Sons of Liberty," a
picture depicting the work done
by Ham Solomon. When the
Jewish Welfare Fund had its
campaign it was Mr. Buchner
who organized the Jewish help
at the studio to give at least one
week's salary. When a project
was under way it was Mr. Buch-
ner who rendered his services to
the very limit. For instance, at
present there is a drive going
on to build a Jewish Community
Center in a certain district in
Los Angeles. Cantor Buchner will
officiate as chazon at the neigh-
borhood synagogue and the
money raised from the High
Holy Day services will be given
towards the project.
As a Jew and a Zionist I can
find no other man who knows
more about both and who cares
more about both. At 4 o'clock
every Friday Mr. Buchner leaves
his office and goes home to pre-
pare for the Sabbath. lie does
not return to the studio until
Monday morning. Cantor Buch-
ner is a strict orthodox Jew
who appreciates what it means
to be • good observing Jew. At-
tending • Yeshivah in this coun-
try as well as in Lithuania,
where he was born, and also liv-
ing in Palestine for five years,
Mr. Buchner understands Juda-
ism completely. As well as being
a cantor, the head of the re-

By RABBI ISAAC STOLLMAN

The inevitable has come: bru-
tality and barbarism are har-
vesting their grim crops. Once
more the Jew throughout the
world was destined to herald to
men through their suffering of
perverted justice and hatred the
great calamity and disaster that
was to be brought about. The
Jew through his sighs of misery
and woes of his precarious situa-
tion echoed the voice of admoni-
tion to world of dire consequences,
and of protest against the dis-
aster of universal engulfment.
But the majority of the nations
went unheeding to our cries and
disregarding our "S. 0. S." while
they resultantly were overswept
by the inertia of this tidal wave.
And now in a state of dis-
solved hopes and illusion to many
a people, Jews throughout the
world welcome the new year with
profound prayers on their lips,
"Zochrenu Lechayim" (remem-
ber us to life) while life has lost
to many its entire value and out-
look and became the synonym for
misery and torture.
However, the message of Rosh
Hashonah is not at all contrary
to what we experience today. What
we need most urgently to invigor-
ate our courage now is the spirit
of the High Holy Days, whose out-
standing morals, responsibility and
optimism mark its importance.
Of all the great contributions

to the world our sense of opti-
mism was one of the finest and
ideal for the preservation of jus-
tice and humanity, and in this
hour when humanity is at the
brink of spiritual and physical
collapse, we, the historical people,
with our Godly endowed gift of
optimism should serve the human
course by encouraging mankind
and by injecting the spirit of hope
unto him. It is this spirit that
sustained us for so many cen-
turies and it is the some spirit
that will lead the world out of
chaos to the light of love and
justice.
While optimism is very essen-
tial at present, no one may over-
look his responsibility. As never
before the Jews of other coun-
tries will have to look to our aid.
A great supply of spiritual as well
as material help will be required
of us. '
Rabbi Isaac once said: "A year
which is poor in the beginning
will be rich in the end." Let us
hope that the year 5700 which
commences in a state of world
disaster will prove to become fin-
ally the year of consolation and
bliss to all mankind.
I have confidence that the Jews
of Detroit will respond with their
contributions of optimism and
responsibility whenever they will
be called upon to do no.

ROSH HASHONAH

By RABBI MOSES FISCHER

Even the customary felicita-
tions and cheerful exchange of
good wishes at the advent of the
holy days rise only tremulously
and hesitatingly from the lips of
Israel at the threshold of this
Rosh Hashonah.
"Happy New Year," "Be writ-
ten in the Book of Good Life."
Alas! Numberless of our fellow-
brethren, under the impact of
the heart-breaking sorrows and
unutterable desolation which the
past year has brought upon
world Jewry, ask themselves,
with a gloo mof despair, whether
such things as "Happy Years"
and "Good Life" are yet "remote
future in store for Israel?"
"Whether the golden rays of
Divine promises and assurances
as transmitted by the Prophets
are strong• enough to penetrate
the thick, dense storm clouds of
persecution and degradation
which overhang the horizon of
Israel?" Many, but erstwhile
brave, courageous and hopeful
Jewish hearts, ask themselves in
the bitter affliction of their
souls: Whether —after all —the
great tragic singer of the "Ile-
brew melodies" was not right
when he sang: "The bird has its
nest, the fox its cave—but Ju-
dah has only the grave"?
The greatness and immensity
of the tragedy of Israel can at
best kt gauged by the fact that
it was preserved to our severely
tried generation to add to the
ancient dictionary of Jewish sor-
row, to the medieval outcries,
exclamations of the Jewish soul
—as indicated in the terms
"Churban," "Galuth," "Gezerah,"
"Shnad"—I say to add to these
ancient expressions of sorrow
new word mediums, depicting
and indicating the hitherto un-
paralleled catastrophies and suf-
ferings which have overcome our
people in our days. These new
word concepts—which in future
times will stand as high-towering
mementos and monuments for
the inhumanity of man to his
fellow-men at large and to Israel
in particular—these new word
concepts, coined in the heart-
blood of Israel, are : "No-Man's
Land," "Perpetual Ocean-Dwell-
ers," "Illegal Refugees from the
Axe of Murderers," "Criminal
Seekers and Searchers of Home
and Refuge"!
In more cultured and civilized
times, these words will burn and
sear as so many Cain-signs the
brow of present day humanity
and, firstly, the forehead of those
who were and are the actual per-
petrators of unfathomable atroci-
ties upon a brother-nation!
On the other hand, these very
concepts will place a starry
crown of unique luster and ra-
diance, studded with gems of
deathless loyalty and self-sacri-
fice, upon the brow of Israel,
designating it once more "Am
Seguloh," "the champion of
God," "Witness of the Al-
mighty," "The Martyr People of
History."
