The Mandates Report

Francis J. McConnell, speaking at the
same gathering of the Jewish Forum As-
sociation, spoke in similar terms in de-
fense of humanity and stated:

Judaism and the Christianity which came

out of Judaism unite in the recognition that.
no matter what their claims as to divinity,
they must seek to make those claims good by
their emphasi s on humanity. The Jewish
Prophets in the beginning gave the world
the noblest stateme n t s of the worth and dig-
nity of man. They taught these idea. as
revelations from the God of Israel. The
Roman Catholic Church has owed its success,
not merely to its claims to special divinity,
but to its devoted study of human needs and
the way to meet them under present human
conditions. The Protestant groups have been
outstanding for their emphasis on the ssicred-
nes. of the individual.
I do not see any way of bringing these
sacred three groups of believers into com-
plete harmony on formal doctrines or creeds
or organization*. I do believe, however,
that no one of them is loyal to itself if it in
any way or degree ceases to keep the em•
phasis on religion as aimed at the largest
regard for and helpfullness to man. This
does not mean "humanism" in the narrow
meaning now current, which declares there is
nothing in the world but men. God is in the
world. All the religions, however, unite upon
this truth that God ihows His presence here
by th e attitudes of His follower s toward one
another. Jews, Roman Catholics and Prot-
estants all believe in God. The power of each
group must be led in the degree to
which the adherents give themselves to car-
ing for others as they care for themselves.
It is the worst of all heresies for any one
of these groups to treat the other groups
as, if
they were not neighbors in the deep spiritual
sense. Moreover, the fundamental assump-
tions of all groups must include the same
conceptio n of men as men in all relations
to men wherever found, regardless of differ-
ences of nationality, race, and degree of
individual or social development. The aim of
any religion worthy of being called divine
at all is to help all sorts and conditions of
men.

PURELY COMMENTARY'

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

"Never Forget" Foe of Anti-Semites

Delegates to the 57th international conven-
tion of the Knights of Columbus, in Seattle,
Wash., were admonished by Joseph Scott, Los
Angeles attorney, to "never forget" the world-
wide admiration accorded Pius XI for denounc-
ing anti-Semitism.
"One of our first duties today," declared Mr.
Scott, "is to eliminate all traces of racial pro-
judice. One of the most dangerous of these
prejudices Is anti-Semitism. Let us remind our-
selves in that respect. How did thin Church of
ours commence its mission? All the 11 w-
owing Apostles were Jews. The first Pope,
Peter, was a full-blooded Jew. The Jewish race
per se is not responsible for the transgressions
of individuals, any more than we Catholics can
be blamed because both Hitler and Goebbele
were baptized as children of the Catholic Church.
Without the Christian good will there can be
no peace either in the home, in the community,
in the nation or in the world. Therefore, those
who breed and stimulate ill will are doing the
work of Satan and his satellites. This does not
mean that individual classes have not the right
to contend vigorously for their particular pro-
gram, economic or otherwise; that is not incon-
sistent with social justice, but the methods of
all should be in the spirit of the Christmas
peace. Without God this generation is sunk,
and without God this nation and the ideals for
which the Constitutional fathers struggled and
died will be lost."
Here is sentiment that will be echoed by
Jews who do not forget their friends, and that
should be studied by our Catholic friends. It
is not only a declaration for good inter-faith
relationships, but also for the best elements of
Americanism.
This statement gained in significance by the
fact that the Bnai Brith lodge of Seattle offi-
cially greeted the Knights of Columbus conven-
tion and furnished automobiles for the trans-
portation of the guests to this Catholic gather-
ing.
Who said Americans of all creeds can not
work and live together harmoniously?

sephus Against Anion" delivered by the Rev. S.
Singer before the Jews' College Literary Society
in London. In the cburse of his address the Rev.
Sin g er said:
For let the Jew do what he will, he cannot

appease the anti-Semite when the fit is on him.
Nothing is more certain than that the most
varied and even directly opposite lines of con•
duct will evoke his fury and his hatred. If
the Jew keeps himself i n the background, it
it because he is the enemy of mankind; if he
come. to the front, it is because he likes to
have a finger in every pie. If he sides with
the populace in their wants and aspirations,
he is ■ socialist; if he is on the side of the
established order, he is a flunkey. If he saves
hi s money, he is a miser; if he spends it, he
is • lover of vulgar display.
There is • grim story in Midrash Echah
(Part 3) to the following effect: A Jew once
passed Hadrian in the street and saluted him.
"Who are you?" said the Emperor. "A Jew,"
replied the other. "What! a Jew, and you dare
to salute Hadrian in the street! Off with his
bead!" Another son of the downtrodden tribe
came that way, saw what was done to his
fellow, and thought it wise to slip past the
Emperor without saluting him. "Who are you?"
again asked Hadrian. "A Jew," he tremblingly
answered. "And you dare to pass the Emperor
in the public street without saluting him!
Off with his head!" His counsellors were per-
plexed. "We cannot understand the principle
upon which Your Majesty is acting. He who
salutes is put to death, and he who does not,
shares the same fate." "Silence," said the
Emperor. "Who will venture to teach me
how I am to rid myself of those whom 1 hate?"

B. Isaacs' Tribute
to A. H. Friedland

Bernard Isaacs, superintendent
of the United Hebrew Schools
of Detroit, who has just returned
from his vacation in Jacksonville,
Fla., paid the following tribute
to A. H. Friedland, the emi-
nent educator and author who
passed away on Aug. 3:
"I knew, we all knew that he
was
walking, in the last fee
years, in the shadow of deat).
but when I read the death no-
tice I was stunfied. It came like
a sudden, unexpected blow.
"Saturday, while I was read-
ing his book of his stories, I
came across a description of
physician, who was aware of the
fact that his days were num-
bered but who had nevertheless
devoted all his time to some
very important medical discov-
eries. 'His (the doctor's) cheeks
were covered with sickly for-
bidding red spots, he suffered
terrific pains but he would not
give up his work. Saint-like he
stood in his laboratory and
worked.'
"When I read this description
my thoughts wandered to the
prototype of this story—the real
saint, A. Friedland whe
worked during the last few years
with a reckless abandon, with a
religious fervor.
"We have lost a great man,
who grew in greatness from day
