RECORDING ENACTS
"DREYFUS AFFAIR"

Zionism's argument again proves valid,
as a result of the inhuman way in which
boat-loads of men, women and children
are permitted to drift on the high seas
without finding a port of landing.
There can be no other solution to ex-
isting•problems than the creation of a
Jewish homeland which will say, in in-
stances like the one accompanying the St.
Louis to and from Cuba, You are wel-
come home. You may always come to
the hearth of your brethren."
The refusal to admit Jews anywhere on
the face of the globe compels the reopen-
ing of the issue over the latest restrictions
forced upon Palestine by the present
British government. Jews must strengh-
en their forces for the unending demand
that Palestine's doors be kept open, that
Jews be permitted to settle there and to
build the land as of right and not on suf-
ferance.
But there are people who seek to in-
terfere with the work for Palestine ra-
ther than to help it. The letter that was
addressed by Rabbi Morris Lazaron to the
New York Times is an example of the
lack of self-respect displayed by some
Jews who glory in "I-told-you-so" opinions

History—Written in Blood!

Outside the U. S. Government circle in Wash-
ington, which possesses truly great men who are
defenders of human rights and heroic inter-
preters of the traditional American view of de-
mocracy, two men stand out in this land as pro-
ponents of the right of men and women to ex-
press unpopular views. One is the mayor of the
largest city in the world. The other is the mayor
of an important city in the South. They are:
Fiorello LaGuardia and Maury Maverick. Both
have been heard from on important occasions.
Both are yet to be heard from in the course of
our present struggle to preserve our democratic
ideals.
Maury Maverick has written by far the most
important documents in defense of the underdog.
His views are especially significant because they
represent the attitude of an heroic Southerner
who risked defeat in his campaign for re-election
as a Member of Congress and who made a speedy
political comeback by defeating the machine in
San Antonio, Texas, where he now presides as
mayor. His "In Blood and Ink: The Life and
Documents of American Democracy," off the
press today in a 75-cent edition published by
Modern Age Books, New York, represents a
clarion call to the brave of our people to carry
on the battle for honest democratic principles.
This is an ideal time to point out to those
who seek to defend the rights of the common
people, and also to the masses of the common
people, that history was, and continues to be,
written in blood, and not in ink alone. Develop-
ing the thesis that old age, as represented in
the reactionary opinions of some judges, often
was responsiblbe for checking progress, Mayor
Maverick rightfully declares that "old men write
in ink, young men in blood." He renders a serv-
ice by admonishing us that: ". . . you will find
that constitutions have blood in them. They
are born in suffering and hardship. But likewise
you should know that constitutions must con-
tinue to pulse with blood, and must have in them
living force."

Zionist Maturity

Until now, only the Labor Zionist
groups of Detroit realized the importance
of active participation in political Zionist
work. The Laborites sent delegates from
Detroit to the last two World Zionist
Congresses.
For the first time this year, the General
Zionists will be represented at a World
Zionist Congress, at Geneva, Switzer-
land, thanks to the selection of Mrs. Jo-
seph H. Ehrlich to represent the Ohio-
Michigan Hadassah Region.
At least two other delegates will go to
Geneva from the labor groups, and Jo-
seph H. Haggai, veteran Zionist leader,
is not only planning the trip abroad but
hopes to visit his son Jeremiah and his
family in Palestine.
Detroit Zionists are approaching politi-

decency throughout the centuries, and especially
most recently. Col. Josiah Wedgwood, great
Christian friend of Jewish Palestine, has urged
the Jewish pioneers to fight for their rights, and
told them that it is better to die for freedom
than to live on bended knees. Hendrik Willem
van Leon has already been quoted in this
column as declaring: "I am on the whole for that
freedom without which I can not imagine living

National Fond Appeal

Mr. Tannenbaum'e address was
devoted in the main to an out-
line of the existing possibilities
for the purchase of land, through
the Jewish National Fund.
Pointifig out that Jews in Pal-
estine possess only 7 per cent of
cultivatable land in spite of their
being 35 per cent of the poen-
lation, Mr. Tannenbaum indi-
cated that large tracts are now
procurable, ' provided the neces-
sary funds can be made avail-
able. He outlined the plan for
the floating of a loan to secure
the necessary sum and appealed
to those in position to advance
loans to do so.

and that American Jewry must
mobilize for an effort in behalf
of Palestine unparalleled in all

Emphasizing continuously the
need for purchasing large
stretches of land in Palestine
through the Jewish National
Fund, Mr. Zuckerman also point-
ed to other needs such as the
creation of industries, the sup-
port of existing banks, the ad-
vancement of credits for new en-
terprises in the Jewish homeland.

Mr. Zuckerman's appeal was
not for passive resistance that
would hurt the Jewish position
in Palestine, but for constructive
resistance. He described the ac-
tivities of Palestine Jews as
aimed at creating and not at
harming the British administra-
tion at the expense of Jewish
progress. Through creative resis-
tance. he declared, will Palestine
be ret•uilt and England given the
proper warning that Jews do not
intend to sacrifice their hard-
earned position for national in-
dependence.
