THE LEGAL CHRONICLE

TO OBSERVE NATIONAL FLAG WEEK
AT TEMPLE VESPER SERVICE FRIDAY

On the occasion of the observance of National
Flag Week, June 8 to 15, a portion of the Vesper
Service at Temple Beth El, on Friday, June 16, will
be devoted by Dr. Leo M. Franklin to the signifi-
cance of Flag Day—annually observed on June 14
—and to the National Flag Week. Dr. Franklin
will discuss the importance of this observance to
Jews and the necessity for its observance and the
dissemination of its spirit.
The services are held from 5:30 to 6 p. m.
All Detroit Jews, regardless of their affiliation
with the Temple, are invited to , attend these
services.

JEWISH CENTERS
HONOR FLAG DAY

the United States Flag Asso-
ciation, Washington, D. C.

Flag Day, which commemo-
rates the 162nd anniversary
of the formal adoption of the
stars and stripes as the na-
tional emblem of the United
States, will be observed on
Wednesday, June 14, by
YMIlAs, YWHAs and Jewish
Community Centers. In many
cities these associations will
take the initiative in enlisting
the cooperation of other
patriotic and civic organiza-
tions in arranging celebrations
under joint community-wide
auspices.
The Jewish Welfare Board,
their parent organization, has
been cooperating with the
United States Flag Association
in the National l'atriotic Re-
vival, culminating in Flag
Week, June 8 to 14. In con-
nection with Flag Week, a
Patriotic Revival Manual has
been isued which contains
many helpful suggestions.
Copies may be secured from

The American flag has the
solemnity of a long tradition,
being older than the flags of
England, France and other
countries. The late Ben Alt-
heimer, formerly president of
Temple Beth El of New York
City, was the first to suggest
and stimulate the observance
of Flag Day be religious or-
ganizations as a medium for
inculcating civic pride and
patriotic sentiment. Subse-
quently this practice was ex-
panded, and now Flag Day is
a legal holiday in many cities,
serving as a symbolic expres-
sion of the solidarity and unity
that our country has achieved.
The Jewish Welfare Board
issued a publication on the ob-
servance of Flag Day, which
contains material on the his-
tory and traditions associated
with the American flag, sug-
gested programs for group
and mass observances and in-
spiring selections in prose and
verse.
