Vienna's population of 1,800,000 is comparable to that of Detroit. Vienna (not so
long ago) was as cultured, as modern, as friendly, as peaceful as Detroit. Vienna's
Jews enjoyed the same freedom as we do. Vienna's schools were open to Jewish
students, Vienna's hospitals to Jewish doctors, Vienna's courts to Jewish lawyers.
Vienna's Karntner Strasse had more Jewish shops than Detroit's Woodward Avenue.
Vienna's restaurants and public places welcomed Jews. Jewish feet wove through
the mazes of the dance to the strains of Viennese music. It was a delightful city.
And yet, when the ukase from Berlin demanded $400,000,000 from the Jews of
Germany, Vienna's Jews paid many millions as their share. Not for the relief and
rescue of their own flesh and blood, but for the privilege of a breathing spell until
the organized bandits could think of another scheme for wringing blood money
from their victims.
This isn't Vienna-thank God! Give-as if
you really thank God.
The share of Detroit's Jewish community in America's battle for the survival of our
own people is only $790,000.
