recall the bitterness of Israel's
lot in Egypt and with the char-
oseth to recall the mortar for
the brickmaking required of the
Israelities by Paraoh.
From the exhibit in the Sem-
inary Museum some interesting
folk lore emerges. The preval-
ence of hunting scenes in Hag-
gadah illustrations and on Pass-
over plates of medieval and mod-
ern Germany would be difficult
for the layman to understand
were it not for the explanation
that ,the successive steps in the
Seder service begin with letters
which form the word YAKNHAZ
and that the Jews of Germany
associated the acrostic with the
German words for chase and
hare as early as the thirteenth
century. This was the devious
origin of the hunting scenes on
Passover plates.
The Passover exhibition, which
will continue through April 30,
is open to the public from 10
a. m. to 5 p. m. every day ex-
cept Fridays and Saturdays. Spe-
cial lectures for groups may be
arranged by application to the
Seminary in advance of a visit.
