Stein, pianist.
Over two decades have elapsed
since the poet, composer and
singer, Solomon Golub, made his
debut at the Arts and Crafts
Theater in Detroit. At that cham-
ber recital the talented man es-
tablished himself as an institu-
tion with many music lovers es-
pecially those who appreciate
cultural contributions. Since then,
year after year, Golub has pre-
sented his works to Detroit
Jewry. With every recital he
added not only admirers of his
songs, but has taught many of
the music lovers to sing his vivid
folk portraits in verse and tune.
In Golub's songs are found a
treasure of Jewish moods; the
sad, the lively, the whimsical, the
tender, and the humorous; also
the prayer as well as Talmudic
chants and the spirit of Sabbath
and the holiday celebration. As
we look further we find in his
album chants of antiquity, melo-
dies of youth, longing and
dreams. And, of course, the ras-
cality of childhood. But, never
a line or a note of resignation
or depression as is typical of
the Jew. Above all, we hear the
dominating tone of ancient litur.
gical motifs in his works which
embrace the whole gamut of hu-
man emotion.
A glance through the program
of this festive recital recalls in
as at once joy of his folk-motive,
"Burickes wif Pesach" which is
followed by 18 gems of his pen.
