13 CAPTAINS 40 OVER THE TOP
IN CAMPAIGN'S WOMEN'S PROJECT

A Greeting of Good Will
PASSOVER 1939

Although the final results achieved by the Women's
Project of the 1939 Allied Jewish Campaign have not been
computed when The Detroit Jewish Chronicle goes to press,
13 captains have reported their teams over the top. These
teams, which, in many instances reached well over 100 per
cent of their quotas, were scattered among the 10 divisions
comprising the Women's Project campaign organization. Their
captains are: Mrs. Morton F. Ashner, Mrs. Harry Becker,
Mr.. William Frank, Mrs. Meyer R. Katz, Mrs. Victor W.
Klein, Mrs. Max J. Kevin, Mrs. Charles B. Lakoff, Mrs.
Joseph Magidsohn, Mrs. Willard D. Mayer, Mrs. Robert J.
Newman, Mrs. Louis A. Sherwin, Mrs. Amson C. Tabor,

and the Pioneer Women'. Organization.
Division G, headed by Mrs. Irving L. Hirschman; had
90 per cent of its quota accounted for at the last Project
meeting, on March 31, and is net to reach the 100 per cent
mark. Mrs. Fred A. Ginsburg, chairman of Division H, has
reported 98 per cent coverage of the prospect slips assigned
to her division.
Mrs. Joseph M. Welt, chairman of the Women's Project,
has appointed Mrs. Abraham Cooper head of a Revising
Committee. Mrs. Cooper, and the members of her committee
are making a study of all pledges received and slips returned,
and are
• assigning certain prospects to special solicitors. A
Clean-Up Snuad will be organized to cover all unsolicited
prospects following the Project's closing assembly, held Friday
afternoon, April 7, in the main auditorium of Temple Beth
El. Eva Lips, author of the best selling •nd highly-praised
novel, "Savage Symphony," was the guest-speaker at this
closing rally to which all contributors as well as the thousand
workers in the Women's Project were invited.
"Inaugurated to raise $50,000 toward the 1939 Allied
Jewish Campaign goal, the Women's Project has achieved a
real success," said Fred M. Butzel, chairman with Henry
Wineman of the campaign proper. "Not only have Detroit
Jewish women assumed their rightful place in the community
as individual contributors to philanthropy, not only have
they subscribed a very substantial amount of money toward
the unprecedented quota we most raise this year, but they
have set the pace for the coming drive."

PASSOVER, WHICH TYPIFIES THE SPIRIT OF FREEDOM, IS A
PECULIARLY FITTING TIME TO DEMONSTATE THS FURTHER-
ANCE OF THE IDEAL OF FREEDOM AND ESCAPE FROM THE
SLAVERY OF INTOLERANCE. AMERICA IS FOUNDED ON THE
IDEALS OF FREEDOM AND INTOLERANCE.

WE, AS FELLOW WORKERS IN THE CAUSE OF PROMOTING THE
BEST INTERESTS OF OUR COMMON COUNTRY, GREET OUR
JEWISH NEIGHBORS ON THIS OCCASION IN THE SPIRIT OF
BROTHERHOOD AND FRIENDLY UNDERSTANDING.

NEW YORK—Rallying to the
call of the World Zionist Move-
ment opposing any plans for the
future of Palestine that would
nullify the Balfour Declaration or
prevent large scale immigration
to the Jewish National Homeland,
Young Judaea, an American-Jew-
ish youth movement, has enlisted
its national membership, totaling
more than 20,000 boys and girls
and adult leaders, to further the
1939 Shekel Registration Cam-

Young Judaea has undertaken
a quota of selling 50,000 shekels

of the United States Central

canship of Lawrence W. Meyer

the May session of the League of

be made for the inclusion of the
Czech refugees within the scope
of the High Commission for Refu-

sessions—but on their way to the
United States.
After several weeks in which he
was unable to secure employment,
Ernst Hoffman realized that al-
though in Vienna he managed a
cosmetic manufacturing laboratory
that produced the highest grade
cosmetics used in many of the cap-
itals of continental Europe, he
must now start all over again at
the bottom.
With undaunted courage he de-
cided to create this fine line of
cosmetics—preparations that were
used by the sophisticated women
of European cities. Many of the
items are entirely new to America.
With practically no capital,
starting on a shoestring, he has
produced his first item which is
called "Hand Beauty by Ernst."
Mr. Hoffman found to his surprise
that many of the cosmetic prod-
ucts en the American market are
sold on a price basis; rather than
quality, and firmly believes that
women of America will pay a lit-
tle more for a high grade prepara-
tion containing the best ingredi-
ents, including imported Parisian
perfumes.
"Hand Beauty by Ernst" will
be on sale at Jewish owned drug
stores. If unable to obtain, phone
Mr. Hoffman at Tyler 0-3706.

PARIS. (WNS)—An estimated
411 Jewish refugees who had
been plying the oceans between
Germany and the Americas for
the last two months, trying to
land in various ports, have finally
found havens. it was announced
here by the HIAS-ICA Emigra-
tion Society, which had inter-
vened successfully. The steam-
ship St. Martin, after trying to
disembark its passengers at sev-
eral Latin-American ports, was
on the way back to Germany
where the refugees faced the fate
of concentration camps, when it
Wan permitted to land its human
cargo at Lisbon. The Oceanisa,
after a similar experience, was
allowed to land its passengers at
Gibraltar, with the approval of
the British government. The other
two ships, the Can Norte and the
Artigas, were allowed to disem-
bark refugees at Montevideo,
Uruguay, from where they will go
to Chile with the permission of
the Chilean government.

Believe it or not, the Zionist
Organization of America will
have 50,000 members by the time
its next annual convention tolls

membership will show an increase
of nearly 100 per cent.
