SINCERE PASSOVER GREETINGS

TWO HUNDRED HADASSAH MEMBERS
DEDICATE STATUE AT PAVILION

DEDICATE STATUE OF HADASSAH NURSE

NEW YORK. — Two hundred
chairmen and guests of Iladassah,
the Women's Zionist Organization
of America,• dedicated a 10-foot
statue of it Hadassah nurse which
will stand at the entrance of the
Hall of Health of the Palestine
Pavilion at the World Fair, on
the grounds of the l'avilion here
last week.
The group heard addresses by
Col. John II. Patterson, World
War commander of the Jewish
forces which fought under Gen-
eral Allenby in the Holy City;
Dr. Israel Goldstein. chairman of
the Board of Directors of the
Jewish Palestine Pavilion, and
Mrs. Max Blitzer, Fair chairman
of Iladassah.
Speaking in the courtyird of
the Pavilion building, Col. Pat-
terson assured the delegates that
though British offilialdom might
be hostile to Jewish efforts in
Palestine, "the English people
were in full sympathy with this
endeavor."
Dr. Goldstein told Iladassah's
representatives that the Jewish
women of America could be protid
of their efforts which have made
Palestine the healthiest spot in
the Near East.
"The health of any organism
is the first requisite for its proper
development," Dr. Goldstein said,
adding, "The upbuilding of Pales-
tine is an organic process that

nothing can halt." American in-
terest in the rehabilitation of Pal-
estine is -real, he stressed, dwell-
ing on his conviction that Ameri-
can public opinion will not permit
political machinations to annihi-
late the Jewish pioeer efforts n
the Holy Land.
Assurance of American sym-
pathy with the Jewish endeavors
in l'alestine was given the group
by Commander Howard A. Flani-
gan, vice president of the World's
Fair Corporation. Greeting the
Pavilion in the name of the Fair
administration, he welcomed the
Palestine exhibit as a symbol of
the peaceful upbuilding of a land
in these days of international
strife caused by militant imperial-
ism. The Jewish Palestine Pavil-
ion, he added, will undoubtedly
he one of the Fair's focal points
of interest.
Mrs. Blitzer explained to the
group the way in which their or-
ganization's health exhibit will
record the growth and results of
the application in Palestine of
American methods of maternity
care, hospitalization, school lunch-
eon services and recreation super-
vision. "Hospitals. clinics and
services established by American
doctors and nurses now net the
Holy Land from the Mediterran-
ean to its farthest frontiers," she
stated.

FOOTNOTES
TO HISTORY

In the 15th century King John
of Sicily authorized the Jews of
his kingdom to establish a Jewish
university.
• • •
Synagogues had the protection
of the law under the Seven•Part
Code in 14th century Spain.
"And for the reason that a syna-
gogue is a place where the name
of God is praised, we forbid any
Christian to deface it, or remove
anything from it, or take any
out of it by force; except
where some malefactor takes
refuge there; for they have a
right to remove hint by force in
order to bring him before the
judge. Moreover, we forbid
Christians to put any animal into
a synagogue, or loiter in it, or
place hindrance in the way of the
Jews while they are there per-
forming their devotions accord-
ing to their religion."

When the Black Plague swept
through Europe in 1348-49, kill-
ing off an estimated 25 million
people, a rumor circulated that
these deaths were due to an in-
ternational conspiracy of Jewry
to poison all Christendom. This
medieval whispering campaign
that had such dire results for the
Jews reported that the Jewish
leaders of the city of Toledo had
initiated the plot, and that one
of the chief conspirators was a
Rabbi Peyret, who, from his
headquarters in Savoy, had dis-
patched his poisoners to France,
Switzerland and Italy.

ADMISSION OF REFUGEE CHILDREN
HELD AID TO EMPLOYMENT PROBLEM

Admitting refugee children and
elderly persons might help rather
than injure the employment sit-
uation in the United States,
Louis Adamic, author of "My
America," "The Native's Return"
and other best sellers, asserts in
"America and the Refugees,"
published by the Public Affairs
Committee of New York City.
Mr. Adamic's pamphlet is a
concise , objective summary of the
refugee question as it affects the
United States. It presents full
information regarding the restric-
tions imposed by the quota legis•
lotion, and outlines suggestions
that have been made for chang-
ing these restrictions. It also tells
of the work done by the various
organizations which have been set
up in this country for handling
the refugees, particularly their
work in finding jobs for the new•
corners that are not obtained at
the expense of Americans.
The bringing in of consumers
with purchasing power should aid
somewhat in disposing 'of our
food surpluses and thus help the
American farmer. Mr. Adamic
points out. "Many of the group
will have to be supported in any
case by American money," he
states, "either in Germany or

elsewhere. It might better be
spent here where American busi•
ness can reap the profit."
The author concedes that there
are real dangers in bringing in
large numbers of adult refugees
in view of the serious social arid
economic problems existing in
this country, warning that a let-
ting down of the bars may ag-
gravate anti-foreign and anti-
Jewish sentiment and activities.
But "we cannot overempha-
size," Mr. Adamic adds, "the im-
portance of continuing this coun-
try's tradition as an asylum. If it
is given up, something important i
and precious will be lost in Amer-
ica. That loss will subtly—and
unfavorably — influence the per-
sonal lives of Americans and most
phases of American life."
"Any program which is set up
to aid the refugees must be for-
mulated in the light of our own
preculiar Problems and institu-
tions," is Mr. Adamic's conclu-
sion.
"America and the Refugees" is
the 29th of a popular series of
10 cent factual pamphlets pub-
lished by the Public Affairs Com-
mittee, Inc., 30 Rockefeller
Plaza, New York.
