Appropriation for Russian
Famine Relief

The appropriation of $20.000,-
000 by the United States Gov-
ernment to finance the transpor-
tation of German-Jewish refu-
gees to Palestine and to provide
them with the necessary means
to begin life anew there was
proposed by Representative
Ilamilton Fish, Jr., ranking Re-
publican member of the House
Committee on Foreign Affairs,
in an address he delivered Sun-
day night at the annual Dinner
of the Order Sons of Zion, a
fraternal Zionist organization
with a nationwide membership,
at the new ballroom of Hotel
Astor. New York,
Robert Scold, who was a mem-
ber of the American Zionist dele-
gation to the London Confer-
ences, stated that the good name
of Great Britain is in jeopardy
unless it keep faith with the
Jews by fulfilling its pledges to
facilitate the establishment of a
Jewish National Homeland in
Palestine.
Expressing his willingness to
vote for an appropriation of
$10,000,000 to $20,000,000 to
transport refugees to Palestine
from the countries of their exile,
Representative Fish cited as Pre-
cedent in support of such action
the allocation of $2,000,000 by
the U. S. Government for famine
relief in Soviet Russia and Aus-
tria, and the bill which he intro-
duced in 1923 and which was
passed by both Houses to appro-
priate $10,000,000 for the pur-
chase of foodstuffs for starving
women and children in Germany.
The speaker also opposed they
opening of the former German
colonies in Africa for the set-
tlement of Jewish refugees, "as
these colonies will, in all proba-
bility, be restored to German
within the next 10 years."
In conclusion, Representative
Fish made a sharp attack upon
those in this country who seek
to implant Nazi and Communist
propaganda on American soil. "I
urge all American citizens not
to compromise in any way the
spread of Nazism or Nazi Bunds
in Free America. There can be
no compromise with their Naziim
on the right or Communism on
the left."
Dr. Israel Goldstein, president
of the Jewish National Fund of
America, congratulated the offi-
cers and membership of the Or-
der Sons of Zion upon having
completed the campaign fund for
the establishment of a refugee
colony in Palestine one year
ahead of the sceduled time. He
referred to the vital need of
extending Jewish land purchases
in Palestine in the face of the
threatened restriction of land
sales in Palestine. Dr. Goldstein
remarked on the fact that the
Order Sons of Zion has contri-
buted the largest per capita
amount to the Jewish National
Fund for the redemption of land
in Palestine in proportion to the
size of its membership.
Dr. Harris J. Levine, reporting
on the contributions to the Fund
by the Camps of the Order.
stated that the raising of the
amount of $100,000 will make
possible the settlement of 1.000
German Jewish refugee families
on the Order's colony in Pales-
tine.
