Passover's Message

In his "Jewish Theology" the late Dr.
Kaufmann Kohler stated, in the course of
his discussion of • the Passover festival:
"However burdensome the Passover minu-
tiae, especially in regard to the prohibition
of leaven, became to the Jewish house-
hold, the predominant feature was always
an exuberance of joy. In the darkest days
of medievalism the synagogue and home
resounded with song and thanksgiving,
and the young imbibed the joy and com-
fort of their elders through the beautiful'
symbols of the feast and the richly adorned
tale of the deliverance (the Haggadah).
The Passover feast with its 'night of divine
watching' endowed the Jew ever anew
With endurance during the dark night of
medieval tyranny, and with faith in 'the
Keeper of Israel who slumberefh not nor
sleepeth.' Moreover as the springtide of
nature fills each creature with joy and
hope, so Israel's feast of redemption prom-
ises the great day of liberty to those who
still chafe under the yoke, of oppression.
The modern Jew is beginning to see in the
reawakening of his religious and social
life in western lands the token of the fu-
ture liberation of all mankind. The Pass-
over feast brings him the clear and hopeful
message of freedom for humanity from all
bondage of body and of spirit."
Many changes have taken place in the
world since this was written in 1928.
Nevertheless, the lesson remains the same.
Throughout the centuries we have been
faced with problems which, while not as
serious as the present, nevertheless chal-
lenged mankind on the question of the
most elementary human principles. This
is truer today than ever before. But we
have survived previous crises. We shall sur-
vive this one. Jews have rejoiced on Pass-
over in previous dark ages. We shall re-
joice again in the dark year 1939. We
placed faith in "the Keeper of Israel who
slumbereth not nor sleepth" before. We
shall revive this faith. We must have this
faith again, for the sake of mankind, for
the sake of all humanity.
Passover's message is not for the Jew
alone. It- is for all peoples. It is for hu-
manity. Passover carries the message of
freedom and of hope and of faith. The
entire world may abandon hope. Others
may preach hate at a time when it is
necessary to speak words of love. But we
shall carry on the traditions for peace and
for freedom. The banner of decency shall .
not be lowered - and Passover provides
the central theme for those who are fight-
ing for freedom. When Passover's mes-
sage is fulfilled, there shall be "freedom
for humanity from all bondage of body
and spirit." ,

The Czechs and the Boycott

Extension of the boycott of Nazi-made
goods to the territory that was once
Czechoslovakia arouses a problem of labels
and delineations. What about goods man-
ufactured by the free and democratic
Czechs before their land was gobbled up
by the Nazi beasts? The New York Times
has analyzed the issue fairly in an edi-
torial under the heading "Made in Czecho-
Slovakia" in which it stated:

Until Wednesday, March 15, Czecho-Slo-
vakia was still an independent republic. All
goods manufactured in that country prior to
that date were entitled to be marked "Made
in Czecho-Slovakia," and all such goods had
a special interest for Americans who wished
to aid the industries of a people whom they
admired and who were in need of friends.
Goods manufactured in the Sudeten area ab-
sorbed by Germany after the Hitler coup of
last September did not bear this mark. They
were "Made in Germany."
Hence those who now buy imported ar-
ticles with the Czecho-Slovak mark need not
feel that they are in any way encouraging
the German political or economic system.
Whether the same persons who yesterday
bought Czecho-Slovak glassware or em-
broideries ought to continue to do so after
the present stock has run out is, of course,
a broader issue on which individual opinion
differs, We know that what strengthens any
part of Greater Germany also strengthens
Hitler. We know too that Czechs and Slovaks
are the same people that they were before,
and just as much in need of bread and butter.
It may well be that the 25 per cent counter-
vailing duty imposed on all German goods by
the, Treasury order of March 18 will leave
the whole question an academic one by making
importations unprofitable.
But the Czecho-Slovak goods now on our
markets are under no possible ban. They
were produced in a free country.

Nevertheless, a warning must be issued
to all libertarians to watch out against
labels reading "Made in Moravia," "Made
in Saxony," "Made in Slovakia," "Made in
Bohemia." The Nazis have their ways of
hiding their tracks, and these may be some
of the methods.
There is justice to the claim of the New

The Campaign Chairmen

Henry Wineman and Fred M. Butzel
may argue to the contrary, but the truth
is that by this time they have been found
to be capable leaders in mercy campaigns.
They have been tried and have not been
found wanting.
The statements they issued last week,
on the occasion of the official announce-
ment of their selection for the chairman-
ship of the 1939 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, reveal an understanding of the
issues at stake at this time as well as a
determination to carry the work for
relief and moral defense to success.
A campaign like the forthcoming one
needs leaders with confidence. Wineman
and Butzel possess this quality. It is
therefore safe to assume that a good start
has been made for the 1939 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign with their selection to
guide the community in the current great
relief effort.

It ia only incidential to the issue that Mr.
Peterson has since wired an apology. (Ile had
better apologize to his non-Jewish readers for
misrepresenting the truth). The point is that his
blunder is typical. It deserves the condemnation
we have just quoted. One does not necessarily
have to agree with everything contained in Mr.
Busker's reply, who is in the main justified in
his stand.
Mr. Peterson's editorial is another instance of
how truth is crucified and the soul enslaved by
hasty action based not on facts but on sentiments.
