Rare Salomon Document
Given Hebrew University
By Major Edward Bowes
Major Edward Bowes has
just presented to the Hebrew
University in Palestine a rare
document containing the auto-
graph of Ilaym Salomon, the
Hebrew patriot of the American
Revolution, and the friend of
Washington, Madison and Jef-
ferson, according to an an-
nouncement by Dr. A. S. W.
Rosenbach, president of the Am-
erican Friends of the Ilebrew
University. There are only a
few documents of Ilaym Salo-
mon known to exist, and the
Ilebrew University has long de-
sired one. It will be added to
the collection of autographs of
r.
famous Jews, formed by
Abraham Schwadron, who do-
He-
nated the collection to the
brew University Library in
1927. It is the largest collec-
tion of its kind in the world.
The document which Major
Bowes has presented to toe He-
brew University is a promisectry
note for 1767 pounds 10 shill-
ings, which bears Salomon's en-
dorsement. This is the first dire-
ument of Salomon's to be platted
in any library in the Near Eakt.
Haym Salomon was one of
the men who financed the Am-
erican Revolution, together with
his friend Robert Morris, whose
autograph, dated May 14, 1785,
has also been presented to the
Ilebrew University by Major
Bowes.
