Ludwig Lewisohn is best known
as the author of "Upstream."
"Mid-Channel," "Expression in
America" and "Creative Amer-
ica." Most of his books have been
translated into 20 languages, no-
tably "The Case of Mr. Crump,"
"The Island Within," "The Last
Days of Shylock," "Cities and
Men" and "This People." His
latest works are "As a Jew
Thinks," "Trumpet of Jubilee,"
and a novel, "For Ever Wilt Thou
Love."
Born in Berlin in 1833, Dr.
Lewisohn was brought by his par-
ents at the age of eight to South
Carolina. Ile graduated with A.B.
and M.A. degrees in 1902 and
received the title Honorary Doc-
tor of Literature in 1914 at the
College of Chatleston, S. G. In
1904-1905 he was on the edi-
torial staff of Doubleday, Pago &
Company of New York City. He
served as instructor in German
at the University of Wisconsin
in 1910-11; was professor of Ger-
man Language and Literature in
Ohio State University in 1911-19.
Ile was editor of The Nation for
a period of five years, from 1919
to 1924, during which period he
also lectured with great success
in all of the principal cities east
of the Mississippi.
In addition to his numerous
works and novels, he translated
many books from the German, in-
cluding dramatic works of Ger-
hard }Iauptmann, Jakob Wasser-
man's "The World's Illusion" and
"Wedlock."
Ile is honorary secretary of the
Zionist Organization of America
and a member of the Jewish
Academy of Arts and Sciences.

190, and is to be held at the
Knights of Pythias Hall, 114 Er-

at 7:30 p. m. Among the events
