The gong has been sounded for the great
humanitarian fund-raising effort that will
be launched under the title of Allied Jew-
ish Campaign. The budget committee has
been selected and the community will soon
be asked for unprecedented sums for re-
lief, for education, for defense.
Detroit Jews may as well be prepared
to do their utmost. This is a time of the
utmost gravity. This is a period in history
unequaled in the annals of Jewry. More
than two-thirds of our people are in dan-
ger. The rest of us are being faced by
problems involving not only the safety of
our fellow men in lands of oppression but
also our own well being in the midst of
neighbors some of whom are being poi-
soned by the fumes that are coming here
from Nazi-Fascist countries.
A grave responsibility devolves upon us.
We are faced with the problem of saving
lives, of saving the spirit of our people, of
providing defensive machinery for those
communities which are still free—free to
speak, free to protest indignities and free
to demand justice. The protection of the
rights of the free communities is as im-
portant as the need for providing relief for
the starving.
An entire people must be saved. This is,
in reality, the major appeal of all Jewish
mercy campaigns of our time. This is the
appeal of our Allied Jewish Campaign.
The response will have to come in sacri-
fices on the part of every one of us. We
should be happy that it comes only in the
form of parting with dollars. We shall be
- even happier if we are never asked to part
with anything else. To prevent further
tragedies—for Jews overseas as well as
for ourselves—is the major objective of
all our mercy efforts today.

Israel, Awake!

"The Guardian of Israel neither sleepeth
nor slumbereth," we recite in one of our
prayers.
But right now the Guardian of Israel
is testing Israel.
Have the descendants of Samson and
David and the Maccabees and the heroes
who refused to sacrifice their idealism and
their principles during the days of the
Crusades and the Inquisition and the po-
groms of Chmielnicki and Pobedonostzev
and Petlura—have the Jews of the present
generation forgotten their heritage, and
are they prepared to submit to the whips
of anti-Semites without an effort at self-
defense?
The favorable comments from scores
of readers on our last week's editorial, "A
Lullaby for Jewry?" indicate that there
is a desire for action, that the masses
are becoming aroused over the antics of
the pseudo-Hitlers who are popping up
on the world's arena.
"Give us a program," one reader asks.
Last week we pointed out that "it is not
easy to outline a program for action in
defending our honor and in challenging
the lies that are being spread against us."
But one thing is certain: a program
of action does not mean inaction; a pro-
gram of action does not imply silence.; a
program of self-defense does not jowly
flown and being trrrnpled upon.
The inquisitive reader, whom we know
to be a careful reader of our columns, has
suffered a lapse of memory. Reference to
our earlier statements will show that we
did propose a program of action; that we
have been pleading for several years that
for every dollar we spend for relief we
should spend several dollars for defense;
that it is important that we defend our po-
sition as citizens and as human beings,
since we may otherwise be placed in the
position of helplessness which will make
it impossible for us even to provide relief
necessities for those now in need.
First, we must make up our minds that
silence and inactivity are tantamount to
suicide.
Having decided that action is necessary,
it becomes important for us to make use
of the press, of the radio, of the pamphlet,
to enlighten our neighbors, to set them
straight regarding some vicious libels, to
cement friendships, to create an atmo-
sphere of decency.
There are many non-Jews—among them
not only laymen but also outstanding
Christian clergymen—who are prepared
to come to the front in the battle for de-
cency. These forces must be mobilized.
There are many Jews who do not be-
lieve that we should enter in a debate
with anti-Semites, and they therefore ob-
ject to our use of the radio for defensive
purposes. The "Immigrants All" program
broadcast by the Department of the In-
terior last Sunday to show the contribu-
tions Jews have made to America proves
that it 'is possible to present a positive
program without entering into debates.
We are strong believers in pamphlet-
eering — although we admit that some
pamphlets are "too heavy" for the average
reader. Therefore, it is our obligation to
prepare material that it suitable for the
average man.
The best answer to those who preach

Israel, awake!

The Late Judge Lewis

He was one of the most congenial, one
of the most democratic, one of the most
lovable characters in Zionist leadership.
Judge William M. Lewis is being
mourned by Jews everywhere who have
had the privilege of knowing him and of
admiring his devotion and his untiring ef-
forts, not only for Palestine but also for
Jewish education and for every movement
in defense of democratic ideals and hu-
man decency.
A very young man, his age at which
he was called to the great beyond betrays
the genius of his make-up. As a youngster
he was already successful in politics. He
was a very young man when he had been
given positions of responsibility in Jewish
life. As a result, he had made as many
contributions in his brief span of life as
many men do in a life 20 years longer.
Judge Lewis's memory will always be
remembered as that of a splendid person
and of a leader who well deserved the
plaudits of his period—and received them.

Three New Magaiities

Three new and very important maga-
zines have made their appearance.
Contemporary Jewish Record, published
hi-monthly by the American Jewish Com-
mittee, is a well-edited periodical. Contain-
ing the full texts of many documents deal-
ing with the international Jewish scene,
including the complete texts of bills aimed
at the Jews in anti-Semitic countries, this
periodical proves to be of great value to
the student of contemporary history. For
the Jewish reader it is of inestimable value
in keeping abreast with the times.
Another important magazine is Religion
—A Digest of Protestant, Catholic and
Jewish Thought. Patterned after other
literary digests which contain the gists of
important literary works of the month,
this magazine is devoted to reproducing
the best products of the ablest writers in
the press of the three leading faiths. The
first issue, just off the press, gives promise
of a real contribution to true good will and
better understanding among all faiths. It
is to be hoped that this magazine will have
a large circulation among all religious
groups.
The latest literary product by a Jewish
group is Jewish Social Studies, edited for
the Conference on Jewish Relations of
which Prof. Morris R. Cohen is president.
The first issue of this new quarterly deals
with important problems of interest to
Jews. It discusses the philosophies of Jew-
ish history, the status of Jewish lawyers in
New York City and other current is-
sues. Its style, its contents and its digni-
fied tone stamp Jewish Social Studies as a
magazine of great value.
The one thing to guard against is over-
production and duplication of efforts in
the literary field. But the trend is in the
right direction, and the creation of factual
periodicals will help keep Jews and non-
Jews informed on major Jewish issues of
the day.

A•11111 ■

will also tend to "discourage spor-
adic and ineffectual activities of
newly formed committees which
Ick the experience and facilities
to collect and administer the
funds so urgently needed in this
critical Period."
"America Must Do Its Share for
Refugees," U. S. Leaders De-
glare; Urge Boycott Spread
Aid for German refugees,
eradication of intolerance to
strengthen democracy, faith in
the ultimate doom of dictatorship
and a call of intensification of the
anti-Nazi boycott, was sounded by
Senator James M. Mead, Congress-
man Bruce Barton, Dr. Joseph
Tenenbaum and Dr. E. George
Payne, dean of New York Uni-
versity School of Education.
The speeches were sponsored by
the Joint Boycott Council of the
American Jewish Congress and
Jewish Labor Committee over
W. M. C. A. in connection with
the sixth anniversary of the Nazi
regime in Germany.

We endorse this viewpoint at this time, espe-
cially in the light of offers of colonies made
to Jews by Great 'Britain. Swamplands, waste-
lands, territories inhabited by savages, are the
proposed gifts of Crept Britain to the Jewish
people. The offers, acceptable as they are in
spite of the objectionable qualities of the colon-
ies, in view of the existing worldwide Jewish
horrors, are not magnanimous when an attempt
is made at the same time to limit the admission of
Jews to Palestine which is today the only land
that can absorb large numbers of refugees. Great
Britain can become truly great if she lives up
to her pledge to the Jewish people. But even
the mightiest can fall once their promises become
worthless.

of Man. It is not alone the French
Empire which is capable of taking
a courageous initiative, but we
pledge ourselves in the belief that
our national resources and the

France will be enriched once more
by this humanitarian act.
No stronger proof is needed
than the statement of Mr. Cham-

as influence as a weapon for en-
listing the support of the Ameri-

on the fact that the 11,000 German
immigrants who have been settled

Similar official statistics have
been published in the Netherlands,
where the German immigrants
have given work to five times as
many of the native population as
the numbers of their own com-

from our own investigation, which

conclusions arrived at by these

France.
Objective truth would have

saturation point of population.
We beg you urgently, M. the

by the interview you gave for

has had such unfortunate reper-
