videl, a =lade imaginaire, and
son-in-law Daniel, a cabalistic do-
generate, exemplify the gradual
debasement of the chassidic spirit.
After attending an orgy of re-
ligious debauchery in Daniel's
house, Mordecai is disgusted and
distraught. Ile begins to fre-
quent the house of Joseph Shtral,
• fine type of the emancipated
Jew. There he discovers the fas-
cinating world outside the ghetto.
Meeting several Polish patriots,
he is quickly drawn into the thick
of their agitation.' Encouraged
by the irresistible Kahane, the ro-
mantic impassioned Jew driving
the proud Poles to insurrection,
Mordecai begins to agitate among
the peasants in the villages, his
zeal and example inflaming them
beyond control. When the govern-
ment spies get hot on his trail
he flees to Paris. There he re-
mains two years, living among

proclaimed the imminent advent
of the Messiah and was burned by
the Inquisition as a heretic. When
the call for recruits reaches Mor-

duty; the vanity and prejudice
of the I'olish leaders notwith-

the liberation of his native land.
Reaching the camp of the insur-

at headquarters, Kahane's last
desperate efforts to cajole the con-

grumbling recruits, and the final
disastrous rout marking the path-

Jews throughout the world join with their
Catholic neighbors in mourning the passing of Pope
Pius XL
A truly great and kind-hearted man, Pope Pius
was an outstanding defender of human rights. His
encyclicals on social justice will go down in history,
and his condemnations of anti-Semitism will be re-
corded among the moat important human docu-
ments.
In the course of his condemnations of Nazi
atrocities, Pope Pius admonished the Catholics that
"we are all spiritual Semites," His intercessions
against oppressors made his reign in the Vatican
stand out as a golden period in Catholic history.
Peace to his memory!

SOFT DIET STAND-BYS
It happens to almost everyone
rill ever stayed in bed long enough
to have an honest illness. Just
when life begins to look rosy, and
you're plotting to proposition the
nurse for a juicy steak dinner,
along comes a doctor who puts you
on a soft diet. For the moment
you'd as soon turn your face to the
wall and give up. Here you've been
getting better by the minute all on
he strength of that succulent piece
of mat. And instead they put yo u

beautiful clear colors-and a high

JEWRY MOURNS DEATH OF POPE

Early in 1921 Joseph Opatoshu
published "In Polish Woods," the
initial volume of a projected tri-
logy. Because it was at once the
first genuinely historical novel in
Yiddish and a work of fictional
excellence, critics and readers
were quick to acclaim it. The edi-
tion limited to Poland sold more
than 15,000 copies in two years.
In this country it proved equally
popular. Before long the book
appeared in Hebrew, Polish, Uks
minion, Russian and German
translations. It is without doubt
Opatoshu's greatest work. A
sequel, "1863," was completed
four years later. The final volume
is still unwritten.
Here the artist is steeped in
study. The two volumes contain
a graphic and variegated panor-
ama of a people in time of
spiritual flux: chassidism at the
beginning of its disintegration;
the haskalah movement in its first
sporadic emergence; the factious
and futile fight for Polish inde-
pendence.
The story begins with a tnag-
nificent reconstruction of Jewish
rural life in an idyllic setting.
Abraham, whose son Mordecai is
the protagonist of the novel, is
the wealthy manager of a large
forest. He is a high-spirited
man, pious, magnanimous-a pat-
riarch. Mordecai, though drawn chassidim
