Prophetical portion—Is. 66. January 20, 1939 Tebeth 29, 5699 — - Honors for Dr. Franklin Dr. Leo M. Franklin's 40th Anniversary in Detroit is an occasion for nationwide interest. The prominent national leaders who are here to pay him honor this week- end, and the spokesmen for the non-Jew- ish as well as the Jewish groups who will participate in the program on Sunday eve- ning, are evidence of the esteem in which he is being held. In a sense this week-end's gatherings are merely an occasion for reviewing Dr. Franklin's accomplishments. Throughout his ministry here the community—non- Jewish as well as Jewish—knew how to respect him and how to appreciate the vitality that marked his participation in important civic and religious movements. His membership on the Library Com- mission is a mark of recognition by the City of Detroit. The honorary degree given him by the University of Detroit is a sign of respect for the courage with which he fought against a state measure that would have closed the parochial schools. He has been honored by having his name inscribed in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund in Palestine. He is now being honored even more im- pressively by the planting of the Leo M. Franklin Garden in Palestine. His alma mater, Hebrew Union College, and the Union of American Hebrew Con- gregations, have paid him deserved trib- ute. Once again we record our good wishes to Rabbi Franklin, and to Mrs. Praklin, with the hope that they will be blessed with very many more years in which to serve this community and to share in its blessings. The New Jewish Center - - 3, resurrected the bones of Woodrow Wil- son for a vicious attack. The following Sunday Father Coughlin similarly resorted to Nazi tactics in assailing a man who is no, longer among the living. Now comes one of the lesser among the anti-Semitic fry with a similar attack but with material apparently coming from the same source that feeds all anti-Semites. The tie-up between the anti-Semites of this country with those in Germany is no longer in doubt. There is a worldwide chain which binds all bigots. It is a chain to be reckoned with, lest the minds of men and women who are fair and who are sincerely seeking the truth should be poisoned. There is a tie-up even between the Arab terrorists in Palestine and the Nazis in Germany, and the spokesmen for the Arab vandals in this country apparently take delight in writing epistles also to Father Coughlin's periodical. While on general principles the attitude of these anti-Semites should be treated with contempt, it can not be completely ignored. The uninformed must be told of the influence of Nazi ideology upon some Americans who would not hesitate to bring the menace of Hitlerism to this country. In her addresses to Detroit audiences, Mme. Harand, the eminent Catholic philo- Semite who is an exile from Austria, ad- vocated a campaign of education and counter-propaganda against anti-Semitism and every threat to democracy. It is a pro- gram which we have advocated for years and in consonance with which we urged that for every dollar spent for relief five or ten dollars be spent for defense. This is the time to launch such a pro- gram in defense of democracy, which is in the long run a defense of Jewish rights. Activities by men like Allen Zoll and his cohorts, among whom is the Rev. Coughlin of Royal Oak, must be revealed to the country at large, since the truth is the most effective weapon against anti-Semites and bigots. The Boycott Goes On ■ nd THE LEGAL CHRONICLE - - League of Women's Organizations Meet Feb. 6 at Temple The annual joint meeting of the League of Jewish Women's Organizations will be held on Monday afternoon, Feb. 6, at Temple Beth El, Woodward and Gladstone Ares. Council to Plan Purim Carnival At a conference of organize. tiers affiliated with the Yiddish Culture Section of the Jewish Community Council, held last Sun- day morning at 9124 Linwood Ave., plans were mode for a Pur- im arnival to be held on Sunday afternoon, March 5. A committee consisting of the following was appointed to plan the program: Louis Levin, chair- man; Shloime Bercovich, secre- tary; M. Silverman, L. Avrin, M. Friedman, Louis Dronzec, J. Weiner, R. Zelsnick, J. Newberg, L. Kramer, B. Rosenbloom, Leo Stunt, Chains Tigel. Reports were given by Joseph Bernstein, chairman of the Yid- dish Culture Section. and William I. Boxerman, director of the Jew- ish Community Council, on the functioning of the Yiddish Lec- ture and Concert Bureau. Thro- ugh this bureau, speakers, dra- matic readers, and musicians are available without charge to the affiliated organizations. During the past two months, about 30 organ- izations have made use of this service. A conference of organizations affiiliated with the Yiddish Cul- ture Section will be held each month to hear reports on the progress of their work. January 20, 1939 PURELY COMMENTARY Py PHILIP SLOMOVITZ W. K. Kelsey Analyzes Nazism to the New York Sun by a Brooklyn reader and is quoted by Mr. Lore as follows: "A Dutchman was dining in the restaurant car of • Germa n train. The waiter approached with the usual 'Heil Hitler r The Dutchman made no reply. The waiter was annoyed. 'Every time I say "Heil Hitler" to you,' he snapped, 'you must say "Heil Hitler" to me.' 'Hitler? He doesn't mean a thing to us in Holland,' remarked the Dutchman, 'Maybe not,' said the waiter, 'but one day you'll get our Fuehrer in Holland, too.' Perhaps so,' smiled the Dutchman. 'We already have your Kaiser.'" The moral is that Dutchmen, being free, retain the right to freedom of speech; the German, being 'hackled, has no way of letting us know how much he finds "to his taste" in the Nazi creations. There- fore, we most conclude even on this score that painting the Germans as satisfied with occurrences in Germany are the conclusions only of The Corn- nientator of the Detroit News. • In his analyses of Nazi "achievements" for Ger- many, W. K. Kelsey, The Commentator of the Detroit News, has been drawing the line between what he believes to be beneficial for the Germans and how similar applications of Nazi theories might work in other lands. In his column in which he dis- cussed Prof. James K. Pollock's "The Government of Greater Germany," he set it down as his per- sonal conclusions that the Nazis have done many things "which the order-loving German must find to his taste, such as the work of the National Office for Organizing Space, the new Municipal Code, and the Labor Front, which looks after social in- surance, unemployment, welfare relief, and the 'Strength Through Joy' department." Mr. Kelsey's views have to be dealt with seri- ously, since there are many like him who are mis- led by an apparent sense of satisfaction with Nazi "achievements" within Germany. These people, unfortunately, are not acquainted with the true facts. Perhaps Mr. Kelsey himself is behind in his reading. If he has followed reports from Germany "He Won't Be with Us Long" carefully he should know that the so-called six- hour day in the five day Nazi working week has Not unrelated to this subject is the following already been increased to a 14-hour working day; editorial comment in a recent issue of the New that labor is completely crushed; that the indus- York Times under the heading "lie Won't Be trialists of Germany are ruined; that the women with Us Long": Condolenows arm In onler to the family and friends are enslaved; that the children are compelled to of Herr hur l bonhomie, botentor of Hamburg. who study only in "schools for barbarism." loot intuit. a (dwell( to the (lumber of ..... (tierce of that • longer No free tool Ilumeatie city. Some Suggested Readings Perhaps Mr. Kelsey will not object to a few sug- gested titles for reading on the subject of Nazi contributions to the life of the people of Ger- many. Ile will find value in Kolnai's "The War Against the West;" Stephen Roberts' "The House That Hitler Built;" Robert A. Brady's "The Spirit and Structure of German Fascism;" Erika Mann's "School for Barbarians." Or perhaps we should recommend to him Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf." This Bible of the Nazis is the best proof of the Ilitlerite aspirations, and open-minded readers like Mr. Kelsey will know how to judge from its contents the great values "which the order-loving German must find to his taste" as prescribed by the Fuehrer for the good of Germany. Our recommended readings are selected not from the point of view of Jews but from the stand- point of non-Jews who are concerned with the welfare of men, women and children of all races and creeds. Every author mentioned is non-Jewish; every volume listed was written for general, not for Jewish, consumption. We know the fairness of Mr. Kelsey, and we are not as discouraged as some of his readers. We are confident that he has been misled only temporarily. A check-up on facts will convince him that the Germans are not as happy as he believes; that the "order-loving" Ger- man people are beginning to show signs of dis- content; that the present regime of the Reich has survived only by inspiring horror (for proof, read Nora Waln's serial "Reaching for the Stars" in Atlantic Monthly, December 1938 through March 1939), and that it can not last much longer. • Mort of him rem mirk., ks nem anittipeachaide \nal doctrine. bot iperintiox its a ell" of the tontittel he (male the olt.ertation that do 4444 no o luxury. 011101 only "strafes salt/ming In mw-material rig hex - could ufford.litipot r elated 1.erinnil ■ . The end of Hitlerism is near. This is our faith in the validity of human freedom as guaranteed in the Magna Charta and the Bill of rights. • Religion in Palestine Trees Planted in the Butzel Forest ----- Honor Dr. Leo M.
