Leaders of the Jewish Welfare Federa- tion and the Detroit Service Group were wise to make a bid for the collection of outstanding pledges to recent Allied Jew- ish Campaigns before embarking upon another fund-raising effort. To conduct another campaign now would mean the piling up of pledges upon pledges. The important thing to accom- plish at this time is to secure payment on all outstanding pledges. When this is accomplished it may be advisable to ad- vance the date of the customary spring Allied Jewish Campaign, in order that much-needed funds for overseas relief be gathered promptly and speedily. But the important thing right now is to collect all outstanding obligations from Detroit Jews who participated in the 1938 Allied Jewish Campaign. The slogan to be adhered to right now is: PAY YOUR PLEDGE AT ONCE! The Fight on Communism For years the Jewish War Veterans of the United States have stood firmly in the front ranks of the fighters against all "isms" which endanger Americanism and the American ideal of democracy. In- cluded in their program was a firm stand against Communism. But irresponsible bigots and rabble- rousers dared in recent weeks to question the position of Jews on the issue of Com- munism. The answer that the Jewish War Veterans gave to this challenge at the mid-winter conference in Atlantic City last Sunday is most effective. It is a brilliantly - composed resolution which leaves nothing to the imagination. It is an emphatic declaration of loyalty to only one flag and only one country: The Stars and Stripes and the United States. The bigots who seek to undermine the peace and security of this land with at- tempts to create inner animosities have much to learn from this resolution, the full text of which appears elsewhere in this issue. It is firm, sincere, emphatic, speaks to the point. Through it the Jewish War Veterans render an important serv- ice to the position of the Jew in America. The Late Emil Vandervelde In the death of Emile Vandervelde, a former head of the Second Internationale and a veteran leader of the Belgian Labor Party, the Jewish people loses a militant friend. He ranked with the late Presi- dent Roosevelt, the late Dr. Thomas G. Masaryk, founder and president of the Czechoslovakian Republic, Charles Ed- ward Russell, John Haynes Holmes and others who were in the forefront when- ever it was necessary to speak in defense of Jewish rights as part of a human pro- gram. Emile Vandervelde was especially out- spoken as a friend of Jewish Palestine. On numerous occasions he lectured and wrote articles in defense of Zionism— especially labor Zionism—and his views were based on personal experiences in Palestine. It is needless to say that Jews know how to revere his memory, just as we know how to honor this great leader in his lifetime. His words did not fall on deaf ears, and the liberal groups who looked to him as leader will surely re- member the causal he espoused when the time comes to act justly with Jewish as- .,,pirations in Palestine. Zionist Memberships Detroit Zionists are engaged in an ef- fort to secure 1,000 new members. In the first few days of the campaign, more than 200 additional affiliates with the move- ment have already been enrolled, and in- dications are that the current drive will be a success. It should be a success. Ludwig Lewisohn ably analyzed the necessity for large Zionist memberships when he pointed out that there is a necessity for Jews not to "desert in the face of the enemy"; "that they give their voice and vote for the life and against the death of Israel." Only a few days ago, the foundation was laid for the 36th new settlement cre- ated in Palestine in less than two years. In spite of all the troubles and difficulties, Palestine is beckoning to Jews and Jews are anxious to go to Palestine. What is needed is a powerful army in Jewish communities throughout the world to as- sist the brave pioneers who are carrying on an heroic effort for Jewish national existence in Palestine. There is a craving among millions of unfortunate Jews for a home. But there is no one to welcome them. Only God- forsaken lands that are either unsuited for colonization or whose natives reject new settlers are projected. Only Palestine is ready to receive more settlers—pro- vided the Jews of the world unite in standing firm for their just rights and in mobilizing their forces in defense of our position. There is evidence to prove that the Arabs are anxious for the restoration of tranquility in the land, but that the terrorists prevent it. Justice Must Triumph It took a long time for justice to tri- umph in the case of Tom Mooney. But the fact that it finally did triumph is an indication that no one need despair even in times of the worst tragedy. There were people who despaired dur- ing the Affaire Dreyfus. They were afraid that justice was doomed. There are people today who are fright- ened by oppression and tyranny and live in constant horror lest brutality should MME. While she urged that every- thing possible be done to save the refugees, Mme. Ilarand stated, in reply to a question, that the most important task to- day is to prevent the increase of Nazi and Fascist rule in Eu- rope and to stop it from com- ing to these shores. Justice Frankfurter For once, Jews have reason to rejoice over the appointment of a prominent Jew to office—not because a Jew has been honored but because a principle is in- volved. For liberals the appointment of Felix Frankfurter to the United States Supreme Court is a great victory because it marks the triumph of the will of President Roosevelt to follow in the path of true democracy and liberalism in selecting the ablest man on the basis of merit. But for the Jews much more is in- volved. Prof. Frankfurter's appointment has been opposed by a number of Jews who were motivated by fear lest the eleva- tion of another great Jewish lawyer to the highest court in the land will again be charged by anti-Semites as domination of this government by our people. 'This false charge has been repeated so often that it has driven fear into the hearts of many Jews, with the results that they adopted a defeatist attitude and not only advised Washington against the selection of Jews to office but also advised Jews not to accept public office. It is a suicidal attitude. It was suicidal when Jews opposed the appointment of Henry Morgenthau, Jr., as a member of President Roosevelt's cabinet. It is a mis- taken attitude today. As citizens of this great democracy we not only have the right, we have the duty to accept appoint- ments to public offices. It is a civic respon- sibility and we dare not shirk it. But more than that: we owe it to our standing as citizens to aspire to these of- fices, just as our non-Jewish neighbors owe it to themselves and to their country to aspire to political recognition. Other- wise we sacrifice a sacred trust as well as a natural right as human beings. As Jews, once we agree to sacrifice our rights in the political life of the country, we may also be asked to sacrifice our rights to share in other activities in this land. We may then be told to quit the profes- sions and to abandon trading and not to be too obvious in commerce. What is to be left then for Jews to do? We can't all become writers for Jewish newspapers, or rabbis, or cantors, or beadles. This is not a life limited to Jewish communities or to Jewish houses of worship. We are a part of a great nation, and we are here to share in the blessings of this great land. A share in the political and judicial and professional life of this country is part of this great privilege, and self-respecting Jews will NEVER consent to sacrifice these rights. Thus, Prof. Frankfurter's appointment is a great event. It is a vindication of American justice. It is a vindication of Jewry's position as a component part of this great democracy. It is a vindication of our great President's consistency and determination to guarantee the liberalism of this democracy. Prof. Frankfurter's appointment natu- rally marks another step in the direction of strengthening the true democratic prin- ciples of our government. A great teacher, an eminent lawyer a man whose guidance has led many able Americans to the high- est posts in this country, was not to be sidetracked when an important selection was to be made for the Supreme Court. The joy with which his appointment has been greeted was excelled only by the unanimity with which the country at large greeted the selection for the Supreme Court of the late Justice Benjamin Nathan Cardozo. No one seems to doubt that Prof. Frankfurter will bring to the highest court in the land a great mind that will make great gifts to America. Toledo's Mercy Campaign Philadelphia's outstanding fund-raising success was the subject of a recent edi- torial. We considered it a triumph de- serving of comment, not only because Kurt Peiser, formerly of Detroit, was the guiding spirit back of that success, but also because it was up to this time the best success in all Jewish mercy efforts in a decade. But equally as important *. the of the Toledo campaign. In this closest- to-us Ohio community with a sizeable Jewish population, the sum of $70,000 was raised against a quota of $50,000. This is an accomplishment that points to the response that is certain to come from Jewish communities in all free lands to the call for relief of the tragically op- pressed and homeless. Mann to Speak March 11 In his introductory remarks, Rabbi Frani told of the progress made in behalf of the boycott in Detroit. He expressed the hope that these activities will be ex- tended and said that the only field in which there has been no progress is in the boycott of the German shipping. He invited the increased interest of the spon- sors of the League for Human Rights to advance the boycott against German shipping interests whom he charged with being re- sponsible for the bringing of German spies into this country. Rabbi Fram announced that Thomas Mann, voluntary exile from Germany, Nobel Prize win- ner in literature and the great- est living writer, will address a meeting in Detroit on Saturday evening, March 11, at the Ma- sonic Temple, under the auspices of the League for Human Rights. lie invited the sponsors of the League to serve on a committee to help organize a sponsoring committee of 1,000 for the Mann lecture. Mme. Harand addressed the students of Beth El College of Jewish Studies on Monday eve- ning. PURELY COMMENTARY (CONCLUDED FROM PAGE ONE) By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ Devastating Indictment of Nazism The current serial appearing in the Atlantic Monthly Magazine, Nora Waln's ''Reaching for the Stars," is one of the most devastating indict- ments of the present regime in Germany. Written dispassionately, factually, by an impartial ob- server who had no interests other than to relate the truth as she had seen it, this book is already a sensation. It indicates that all is not rosy in Germany; that there is grumbling and dissatisfac- tion; that men and women, in the privacy of their homes, are _beginning to speak in protest against the outrageous barbarities. One of the incidents related in this book deals with the murder of a man who dared to oppose the Nazis at the March 1933 elections. ''On July 16, not quite six months after Hitler became Vice-Chancellor, a law was published forbidding all parties except the National Socialist Party. Shortly afterwards this man went for a walk one evening and did not return. At Christmas the wife shot their five -year-old son and herself 'while of unsound mind.' She had that morning received a package—a cigar box marked with a swastika and the word 'traitor' before her hus- band's name. It contained ashes. I was not yet used to things like that, and recovered con- sciousness to find the narrator splashing cold water on my face and neck. My friend was crying quietly, as she scolded me: 'You have got to learn to steel yourself against shock. This thing isn't going to end in Germany—or in Eu- rope." Shortly before reading this horrible story, the Commentator had studied the documents con- tained in "The German Reich and Americans of German Origin" (Oxford University Press) and he had wondered" whether there was justification for the frightful warning by the 14 prominent American sponsors of this book who pointed out that if Nazi propaganda should continue unchecked "it cannot fail to create a cyst in the body politic of the American people"; and warned further that friction between the group render- ing "primary allegiance to the ruler of a foreign power" "and the rest of the American people might result in unrest and possible bloodshed." But stories like those coming from Germany, in- dicating that the Nazi sadists are bent upon de- stroying every vestige of human decency, justify every warning against the Nazi menace. • Jews Remain in the News Jews continue to be a topic of major impor- tance in the news. Most Jews would rather it were not so. But every newspaper, every im- portant weekly and monthly magazine, continue to feature the plight of the Jewish people. As a rule the news is handled sympathetically. Dr. Alvin Johnson's article "Good Will to Men" in the December issue of Atlantic Monthly was an unusually fair presentation of his case—al- though we differ with him on the point he ad- vances that there is no anti-Semitism in trades. Let him investigate some of the plants where Jews are hounded by their fellow workers who make life miserable for them. We can give him data on innumerable complaints. But except for this point he has written a great article which serves as a splendid answer to a most unpleasant article in the January Atlantic Monthly, by an anonymous writer, on the subject "I Married a Jew!" This is a most unsympathetic piece. It is a brazen effort on the part of a Jew's wife who claims to be pro-Ilitler. It is unpleasant from the point of view of the Jewish "hero" who apparently does not know how to hold his own fort. An unusual presentation of the Jewish issue is contained in an article in the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser by its editor, Grocer C. Hall. Writing under the heading "The Egregious Gentile Called to Account," Mr. Hall reverses the issue and pre- sents "Clinical notes on his (the Gentile's) lack of gallantry and sportsmanship, his bad mental habits, his tactlessness, his lack of imagination, his poor discernment, his faults as citizen and DOCUMENTS EXPOSE ACTIVITIES OF NAZI PROPAGANDISTS OUTSIDE REICH (et-INCLUDED FROM PAGE ONE) duty of Americans to take cog- nizance of the facts and impli- cations involved in the evidence" presented in this documented statement. To Get Wide Distribution "The German Reich and Amer- icans of German Origin," is high- ly recommended by the League for Human Rights as an impor- tant factual document to com- bat the dangers of Nazism in this country. Mrs. Samuel Schaflander, secre- tary of the League for Human Rights, has announced that through the shoppers' commit- tee of the League efforts are being made to have a copy of "The German Reich and Ameri- cans of German Origin," placed on the shelves of every public and circulating library in the city. The book will be on sale at all of Detroit's leading book stores. A small savings may be effected by ordering the book through the League office, at Cherry 6906. "All Americans interested in preserving democracy should read this book," Mrs. Schaflan- der commented. "School for Barbarians" Another great book which un- covers the horrors of Nazism in all their brutal nakedness is Erika Mann's "School for Bar- barians," which has been publish- ed in a 50c edition by Modern Age Books, 432 Fourth Ave., New York. With an introduction by her eminent father, Thomas Mann, Nobel Prize winner in literature and the greatest living writer, this volume describes the hor- rors of Nazi control of the minds of the youth of Germany. Like her father a voluntary exile from Nazi Germany, Erika Mann quotes Nazi authorities, textbooks and periodicals to I show how the minds of the Ger- man boys and girls are being , poisoned and how they are being prepared to carry on the brutal work of their elders. Fortunately, Miss Mann's book is not limited to description of horrors. It also tells of brave souls—of Christian clergymen— who dared to protest and to !meek the true word of God, and who are today being punished by the brutal regime of Adolf Hit- ler. The Nazi attitude towards the preachers of the Gospel may be hest summarized in the fol- lowing quotation from "School for Barbarians." Officially only, "gentle" descriptions are given of the Bible. "At mass meetings other opinions appear: Gau-Ober- mann Krause described the Old Testament in the Sport Palace in Berlin as a 'book for cattle- drivers and procurers'; and he, was never reprimanded." "The songs, choruses and playlets of the Nazi youth are barbarous, in the sense of the l ALLIED CAMPAIGN COLLECTION DRIVE word outside Germany," Miss Mann writes, and she quotes from numerous sources to prove her point. She quotes from Alfred Rosenberg who wrote: "And so the German Reich of the future will have to regard the childless woman—regardless of whether or not she is married—as an in- complete member of the National Commonwealth." In this spirit, also, other Nazi leaders are lead- ing Germany to destruction— first by destroying the minds of the young. Miss Mann concludes her book with an epilogue which describes the reaction to democratic ways of living by refugee children. This chapter alone is worth the price of 10 copies of this impor- tant book, since it is a great tribute to American democracy. "School for Barbarians" should be distributed in the hundreds of thousands of copies. It is a powerful weapon against Nazism and in defense of democracy. Miss Mann's latest attack on Nazism, under the title "Hate Thy Neighbor," will be published next month by Modern Age Books. In the fall, Houghton Mifflin Co. will publish her book "Escape to Life." (Erika Mann and her brother, Klaus Mann, will be in Detroit on Sunday evening, March 5, to deliver a joint address ■ at the Institute of Arts. under the direction of the World Ad- venture Series. on the sub- ject "School for Barbarians— The Nazi Influence on Ger- man Youth."). Chinese Fight for Freedom Part of World-Wide Struggle for Rights of Commo n People "When 450,000,000 Chinese win their freedom, the world will soon be free." This is the view of Anna Louise Strong, eminent journalist, in her "One-Fifth of Mankind," the story of how "China Fights for Freedom," re- cently published by Modern Age Books, 432 Fourth Ave.. in a 50c. edition. "Step by step." she writes, "the struggle of the Chi- nese people for freedom from the invader becomes part of the world-wide struggle for the rights of the common people against the fascist oppressors and makers of war." Generalissimo Chiang Kaishek is quoted in "One-Fifth of Man- kind" as telling his generals and soldiers: "The United States of America fought nine years for independence. If China has to fight nine years for its indepen- dence, we can fight nine years. China has greater resources than America had. We have funds enough at present to carry on for another two years, and if these are exhausted we shall find other means. er e must not rely upon foreign nations but upon our- selves; if we show ourselves strong, then foreign nations will help us." neighbor, his gullibility and arrogance." There is also a lighter side to the Jews-in-the- News mania. Adam Coaldigger's column ("This Cock-Eyed World") in the American Guardian recently carried this piece: ItrisoN11 THE STE\ sold old King Pharaoh To his Nibs of liabilon Iteloeen %eana sod itoore shorely fixed the Jean. Lytell, represent- ing Actor's Equity, said he looked forward to the time when 'the Nazi salute would only mean that a little boy wanted to leave the room..'" Coaldigger's column also carried these defini- tions: FIO•111.1111 Ilia DO: with gun In hand. lea-but Men: Folks who are etrong for !lessen, but dun t want to hurl the feelings of the devils tho're working for . Assuming responsibility for a large portion of the work in the Emergency Collection Cam- paign, the collection and cam- paign planning committees of the newly-organized Junior Section, Detroit Service Group, undertook to bring in cash payments on all outstanding Allied Jewish Cam- paign pledges under $10. Led by the Junior Section collection committee co-chairmen, Miss Ro- salind Schubot and Eliot Magid- sohn, this enthusiastic group of young people are tramping the highways and byways collecting small amounts that in the aggre- gate will amount to a substan- tial sum. The Juniors are work- ing under the following six cap- tains: Miss Mildred Goldman, Miss Sadie Beth Klein, Mrs. Jack Rom, Jerome Rosenzweig, Miss Esther Schultz and Miss Dorothy Yu ra. It is evident that the Franco forces are follow- ing in the footsteps of their strongest supporters: Hitler and Mussolini. But the anti-Loyalists never- theless seek to enlist Jewish support for the "Keep the Spanish Embargo Committee." Prof. Frankfurter's Kin Learns of Appointment VIENNA. — (WNS) — Dr. Salomon Frankfurter, 80 years old, once an honored Austrian Government official, but more recently, for a time, a Nazi prinsoner, learned that his nephew, Prof. Felix Frankfur- ter had been appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. A former director of the Vienna University Library, Dr. Frankfurter is said to have been a good friend of the late Austrian Finance Minister, Dr. Joseph Redlich. He became a public figure when he was ap- pointed under the Dollfuss- Schuschnigg regime to the Cul- tural Council of the Austrian Parliament. After the German army took Austria he was ar- rested and held for several days with .,then Jews and prominent figures of the former regime. PALESTINE PARLEY DRAWS ATTENTION OF ENTIRE WORLD (CONCLUDED FROM PAGE ONE) Syria, is further complicating the issue. It is now reported that the Arabs will demand the right to form a legislative council free from veto and without British rep- resentation. It is unlikely that such demands will be granted by Great Britain. 5,600 Families Register Adoption Wish JERUSALEM. — (WNS - Pal- car Agency)—According to a re- port issued by the Hitachduth Olei Germania, 5,600 families have thus far registered their desire to adopt German Jewish children. This is in addition to the requests made by all the Keren Hayesod settlements, which indicated their willingness Ito take as many of the children as would be assigned to them. Arab terrorism in Palestine has increased recently and for a time the terrorists had directed their activities almost entirely against Arabs who refused to co-operate, but Jews and Britons are again victims in the campaign of kidnap- ping and murder. Three Jews were killed and two severely wounded last week-end. ' A report issued by the American Economic Committee of Palestine on the development here through Jewish enterprise revealed that Jews invested £4,540,884 during 1938. The sum included nearly £2,000,000 for building up activi- ties, £62,000 for industrial enter- prises, nearly £1,000,000 for agri- culture, 1606,000 for new urban and farming estates and £438,000 for transport and other business. For many years past, the Jewish War Veterans of the United States have at every annual convention and at every possible opportunity not only warned the American People against the insidious spread of Communism, but have exerted every effort possible to eradicate this menace from Amer- ican life. "True Americanism can brook no doctrine sinimical to the guar- antees of the Constitution of the United States and its Bill of Rights. Communism is a men- ace to established constitutions of American democracy, incom- patible with the tenets of self- expression in religion, govern- ment and the pursuit of happi- ness: We recognize now, as we have in the past, the menace of this 'ism' to the welfare of our nation and particularly of Amer- ican youth. The doctrines of Judaism have continually opposed any doctrine which menaces man's very right to believe in God. 'Every member of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States stands dedicated to the high purpose expressed in the pre- amble to our constitution, which reads: 'To maintain our allegi- ance to the United States of America to foster and perpetuate true Americanism, to instill love of country and flag, to combat whatever tends to impair the effi- ciency and permanency of our very institutions.' "The Jewish War Veterans of the United States, gathered in mid-winter conference at Atlan- tic City, N. J., on January 6, 1939, hereby reaffirm its policy established for the past 42 years, as upholding these ideals which have been the foundation of American democracy and liberty. Recognizing that without them, the cherished rights and privi- leges of Americans would dis- appear, American Jews have ever been quick to defend these prin- ciples in time of war and in time of peace. "Therefore, be it resolved, that the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, through its Stand- ing Committee Against Commu- nism, continue its historic mili- tant opposition to this challenge drected against established Amer- ican democracy to the end that this menace may be rooted out and destroyed." Other resolutions adopted, es- tablished a Committee to Aid Refugees of all faiths; reaffirmed faith in democracy, attacked Nazism and Fascism and widened an Americanization program.
