The Danger of Ignoble Silence

In his brilliant radio address over a nation-

Even if it were only for the purpose of shar-
ing again with our readers the contents of the
important American document—the Bill of Rights
—this significant editorial deserves reprinting.
But there is a more important purpose in re-
ferring to it at this time.
As Americans citizens, it is our sacred duty
to labor with all other citizens, regardless of
race or creed, for the perpetuation of the prin-
ciples embodied in this document. This we can
accomplish only by constantly battling for justice
and equality, for the freedom which we are
guaranteed in this document. In countries like
Germany or Japan or Italy or Russia, or in some
of the dictatorships in South America, men and
women must keep silent. To speak there would
be tantamount to inviting the death sentence.
But in democracies, where freedom of speech and
assembly are not curtailed, it is a duty to speak
in defense of our free institutions. How else
are these institutions to be protected?
It is an interesting coincidence that in the some
issue in which the New York Times published
the editorial on the Bill of Rights also appeared
an editorial under the heading "The liar As-
sociations Speak," in which the obligation for
democracies to protest against oppression is em-
phasized. This editorial follows:
