William E. Dodd. former am-
bassador to Germany, in the key
statement of the meeting, de-
clared that the work done by
the American munitions makers
in the early days of the League
of Nations had been responsible
for the rise of Hitler and the
conditions in Germany today.
Introducing Senator Theodore
Francis Green of Rhode Island,
Mayor LaGuardia said: "Now, as
I stated at the outset, this meet-
ing is called for the purpose of
signifying the feeling of the peo-
ple of this city and country to-
ward the outrages being commit-
ted in Central Europe. To make
it typically American„ the com-
mittee purposely invited speak-
ers of different viewpoints. This
is America—where men of dif-
ferent viewpoints may get to-
gether . . . Why, we don't exe-
cute our political opponents!"
And he held out his hand to for-
mer Mayor John P. O'Brien, who
was the mayor's opposing candi-
date in his first mayoralty cam-
paign, and who preceded him in
office, "That's America," shouted
LaGuardia after they had shaken
hands. "And the committee want-
ed to have the meeting where it
could be heard and know that on
one point Americans are united."
United States Senator Green
of Rhode Island opened his ad-
drees by saying: "I come from
a state that was founded by a
religious refugee, a state which
he dedicated to the principles of
soul liberty—freedom to worship
God according to the dictates of
one's conscience (Roger Wil-
IMms)." Asserting that "the Nazi
policies are more than a plan for
plunder and more than a move-
ment against Jews alone," and
that "it is not merely an attack
upon the Jewish religion—it is
also an attack upon all religion,
the senator in the course of his
speech quoted President John
Quincy Adams, who said: "'This
principle, that a whole nation
has a right to do whatever it
pleases, cannot in any sense
whatever be admitted as true.
The eternal and immutable laws
of justice and of morality are
paramount to all human legis-
latures." In summing up, Sen-
ator Green said: "First, we shall
protest, as Americans have al-
ways protested, against inhuman-
ity. Second, we shall assist those
who are oppressed for conscience.
Third, we must strike at those
who seek to create dimension
and disunity among us by foster-
ing distinctions that are un-
American. And finally, we must
keep America safe for democ-
racy. Asserting that "today our
institutions are being attacked
from without, and an active de-
fense is essential," he said; "to
such a defense, in whatever form
it may prove necessary, let us
pledge, ourselves here."
IT A. Wallace, in a plea for the
Secretary of Agriculture Henry
A. Wallace, in a plea for the
continuance of the United States
as a haven for persons of all
races and creeds, declared that the
guarantees of the Bill of Rights
are "our most sacred heritage."
"As we look abroad," Mr. Wal-
lace said. "we see that freedom
of speech, freedom of the press,
and freedom of religion have been
denied," that "attempts are being
made to impose on an unwilling
world the assumed superiority of
a particular culture, a particular
language, a particular race .. .
