Mr. Ford's Statement

2 ,

Mr, Henry Ford's statement appealing
for the perpetuation of the tradition that
this country serve as a haven of refuge
for the oppressed has great moral value.
It is much more an ethical declaration of
faith than a practical offer of a solution
to the existing problem of Jewish home-
' lessness or the plight of refugees—Catho-
lk, Protestant and Jewish alike. But as
an ethical declaration it carries with it
great significance.
There is reason to doubt the practical
value of Mr. Ford's statement because it
is unreasonable to 'expect that Congress
will act to open the doors of this country.
wide for a new wave of immigration. The
viewpoint of a great Catholic periodical
like The Commonweal, which advocates
the opening of the doors of this land to
refugees, is unfortunately in the mi-
nority. The prevailing sentiment is to
the contrary—that a country with more
than 10,000,000 unemployed can not in-
crease joblessness by admitting additional
large numbers of settlers. It is true that
new immigrants will create new oppor-
tunities in this country; it is true that the
genius of some of the great men who
would come here would help make this
country still greater. But these arguments
to our regret have not convinced labor.
Therefore it will be difficult to fulfill Mr.
Ford's commendable wish.
But the effect of his words carries with
it a severe blow for the anti-Semites
throughout the world. His statement
strikes at the very root of some of the
major claims of the spreaders of bigotry
and intolerance—from, Munich, Germany,
to Royal Oak, Mich.; from Berlin, Ger-
many, to Topeka, Kan.; from Erfurt, Ger-
many; to Tompkins Corners, N. Y.
Mr. Ford's latest statement vindicates
him.
We are grateful to Mr. Ford for hav-
ing responded to the appeals that he de-
nounce the anti-Semites; that he reiterate
his desire to see friendly relations and
good will established, on this continent
among all peoples wh6 make up this great
American family; that he take a hand in
discrediting libels the spread of which un-
dermines amity and tolerance.
On July 29 we wrote in an appeal to
Mr. Ford: We know of no more sacred
work that Mr. Ford could enlist in at the
present time than that of co-operating in
dealing a death blow to religious and
racial bigotry." Mr. Ford's statement of
Wednesday, November 30, 1938, marks
his enlistment in this cause. It speaks vol-
umes in denunciation of the anti-Semites
who use untruths to foster their destruc-
tive programs.

A Chair in Jewish Studies

Some time ago, Dr. Bernard Heller, di-
rector of the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation
at the University of Michigan, proposed
that a chair in Jewish studies be created
at the University of Michigan. He pointed
out that such an institution can be estab-
lished for a very small annual endowment,
and he urged it strongly on the ground
that Jews should make a direct contribu-
tion to the state university.
It is to be hoped that Dr. Heller's pro-
posal will be seriously considered again
not only by Bnai Brith groups but by
others in the state who are apprehensive
of the need for Jewish participation in
the cultural advancement of our higher
institutions of learning. The establish-
ment of such a chair would fill a need for
Christians who seek to understand Jewish
life and Jewish movements. it would at
the same time serve a definite Jewish need,
in that it would create an opportunity
for presenting facts about Jews rather
than leave hearsay dominate in non-Jewish
thought. Also, it would be a signal to
our state institution that Jews are pre-
pared to make a contribution to the uni-
versity in concrete fashion.
If Dr. Heller's proposal has been drop-
ped by those to whom he presented it, it
is high time to revive it.

Strides in Hebrew Studies

An interesting factual review of the in-
crease in the study of Hebrew in the New
York high schools appears in the current
issue of the Menorah Journal. Mordecai
Jr. Lewittes points out in this article that
from the small number of 60 students,
eight years ago, the enrollment in Hebrew
classes has grown to 2,077 this year. Mr.
Lewittes is confident not only that more
and more of the 110,000 Jewish pupils in
the New York City high schools will elect
to study Hebrew as time goes on, but that
non-Jews as well will take advantage of
this opportunity to learn Hebrew as a
modern language which emphasizes the
heritage and the cultural aspects of the
Jewish people.
This survey received emphasis by the
announcement just made by New York
University that two full credit courses
in modern Hebrew will be offered be-
ginning with September on a par with
other foreign languages. In the mean-
time Jewish communities are showing in-
creased concern over the need for the ad-

"A. Beginning September 1, 1941, all
boys, before being admitted to the Bar Mitz-
vah Ceremony in congregations affiliated with
the Board of Jewish Education, will be ex-
pected to fulfill the following requirements:
1. A minimum of three years of at-
tendance at a daily Hebrew School of
recognized standing, or
2. Evidence of the candidate's fit-
ness to be determined by the Board of
Jewish Education through examinations
that will test the following:
a. Understanding of the Hebrew lan-
guage equivalent to what is ex-
pected of pupils in affiliated schools
who have studied for a period of
three years.
b. Ability to read the prayers with a
reasonable degree of fluency as well
as the ability to follow the serv-
ices as practiced in the adult syna-
gogue.
c. Understanding of the customs and
ceremonies of Jewish life—customs
pertaining to the holidays, customs
of home and synagogue, and cus-
tom, related specifically to the
Bar Mitzvah ceremony.
d. Knowledge and understanding of
the major events, personalities and
movements of Jewish history, and
of the contemporary Jewish world
with special emphasis on the posi-
tive and constructive phases of
present-day Jewish life.
e . Ability to read with understand-
ing some of the early chapters of
the Book of Bereshit.
3. These requirements are to go into
effect after Sept. 1, 1941. Parents are
thus given a sufficient amount of advance
notice so that their children can rea-
sonably be expected to meet the neces-
sary requirements. Until September 1,
1939, one year of attendance at an ac-
credited daily Hebrew School will be ac-
• ceptable, and until September 1, 1940,
two years of such attendance."

PURELY COMMENTARY

A Snowden Story—With a Moral

If you have ever done "housecleaning" you
know what a mass of junk can be accumulated
under one roof—but you also learn how much
interesting and valuable material can be pre-
served.
This is what happened to this commentator
when he went through a dust-laden pile of clip-
pings the other day. There was much that was
invaluable, but also a great deal of immense in-
terest, especially as material for comparison of
events as they have changed in the course of the
past decade.
Among the clippings was one from the New
York Times of Aug. 12, 1929. It provides so
striking a commentary of current events and
on British politics that we reprint here now! It
was in the form of a special cable to the New
York Times from The Hague and read as fol-

Bingay: "Lct Us Have Peace"

Both are indications to us that we are
justified in retaining faith in American
democracy.
It is needless for us to say that those
who value freedom in this country will
applaud the Free Press and Mr. Bingay.
As Jews we are doubly grateful.
These are times when freedom of the
press must be defended.
It is a source of great satisfaction to
know that it IS being defended. The pres-
entation of facts in our newspapers, the
trouble that was taken by the Detroit
News to call Alexander Kerensky in Chi-
cago for his splendid statement, the refu-
tation of the Coughlin charges, all indi-
cate that truth can not and will not be
stifled. And, incidentally, the stand The
Detroit Jewish Chronicle takes in defense
ofJewish rights is vindicated by the ac-
tions of the metropolitan newspapers.

Give to the Community Fund

There are many Detroit Jews who have
not yet contributed to the Community
Fund.
It is their duty to do so NOW and to
give as liberally as possible.
This duty devolves upon Jews not only
because several of the most important
Jewish social service causes are included
in the Community Fund, but because sup-
port of the fund is a major civic responsi-
bility.
As citizens we are obligated to strive
jointly with out neighbors for the better-
ment of the status of all groups. Only a
a secure and healthy community can serve
as a powerful weapon for the perpetua-
tion of our democracy.
Give to the Community Fund—NOW
and LIBERALLY.

Hadassah Carnes On

Once again Iladassah has scored a tri-
umph in Detroit. Consistently, without re-
sorting to apologetics, the women Zionists
have carried on a campaign for practical
purposes—to settle refugee Jewish chil-
dern in Palestine. The success of the local
effort is a tribute to the leadership of the
movement in this city and to the objec-
tives of this great movement which has
been one of the most vital factors for good
in the present world-wide Jewish crisis.

The Vaad Leumi, Jewish Na-

of the names of families willing

Back Adoption Plans

The Chief Rabbis of Palestine
cabled Secretary Malcolm Mac-
Donald urging him to facilitate
the admission into Palestine of
Jewish children from Germany,
so that the adopt-a-German-child
program of the Jewish Com-

Support of the scheme was
also conveyed to the Colonial

municipality of Tel Aviv, which
informed Mr. MacDonald that in
the projected adoption of 10,000
German-Jewish children Tel Aviv

"I, THE JEW"

Extract From Sermon by Rabbi
Morris Adler at Congrega-
Zedek
tion Sh

I, the Jew, refuse to hate.
I will not answer hatred with
hatred. Mine is a religion of
love. My forbears proclaimed
thousands of years ago, the
most revolutionary principle of
human relations, "And thou
shalt love thy neighbor as thy-
self." That great law is still
in my Bible. I intend to keep
it in my heart. I, the Jew, am
sad. I am troubled. I am
in pain. I, the Jew, suffer as
it is given to no other people
to suffer. But I refuse to
hate. The kindliness which I
have inherited, the gentleness
which my Prophets taught me,
the wisdom and sympathy my
sages inspired in me—these I
will not abandon.
I will not allow men fren-
zied with hate and bitterness
to evoke hate and bitterness
I will not allow
from me.
my spirit to reflect the black-
ness, the wickedness of my sur-
rounding. Every hurt my tor-
mentor can inflict upon me
This hurt he never will inflict.
He will never hurt my spirit,
by filling it with hate. I will
not stoop to his level. I cry
out in protest. I cry out in
pain. I will not cry out in
hatred. Tenderly, carefully
and devotedly will I. the Jew,
in these doomladen days, nour-
ish and nurse the buds of love
within my heart. In the resert
of modern life. my soul will
be an oasis of human sympa-
thy. I refuse to hate.

YEAR FOR QUOTA OF $25,000

Three Detroit Delegates Inspired by Deliberations of
tional Conference

Na-

Three enthusiatic delegates,
Louis Levine, Osher Goldberg
and Julius Lev, returned this
week from the 14th annual con-
vention of the Gewerkschaften
campaign, held at the Pennsyl-
vania Hotel, New York, during
the week-end of Nov. 26-27.
"After attending the conven-
tion and then talking to some of
the leaders of the campaign here
in Detroit," said Levine, " we are
convinced that the spirit of the
convention will be carried over
to our activities here, and that we
will oversubscribe our quota of
$25,000. New organizations and
more individuals must be added
to our list of workers in order to
carry the word of the marvellous

and vital work of the Histadruth.
We are contacting all organiza-
tions and urging them to send
delegates to the opening confer-
ence at 2:30 p. m. on Sunday,
Dec. 11, in the social hall of
Bnai Moshe.
The New York convention, of
almost 1,800 delegates. represent-
ing 500,000 Jews, received with
thunderous applause the an-
nouncement that the total funds
raised by the Gewerkschaften
Campaign during its relatively
short lifetime was in excess of
$2,000,000- that, of this sum, al-
most $1,000,000 was raised with-
in the last five years; and that
the quota for the campaign, na-
tionally, this year will be $750,-
000.
