Judge Saves Jew From
Importation,

CHICAGO (WNS) - Solo-
mon Weinberg, 31-year-old na-
tive of Czechoslovakia, in the
United States illegally, was
saved from deportation when
Federal Judge Philip L. Sul-
livan granted him a writ of
habeas corpus and freed him
from custody. To deport a
Jew to Central Europe at the
present time, the judge said,
"would be cruel and unusual
punishment." Mr. Weinberg
was born in a part of Austria-
Ilungary that later became
Czechoslovakia. H e entered
this country in August, 1927,
while employed on the liner
Berlin. After missing the ship
'he remained here, and was ar-
rested by immigration authori-
ties last June.
