They became the fervent
disciples of the Syrian Christians
and the, pagan philosophora who
had fled for refuge to distant
Persia. From these masters the
Arabic obtained a knowledge of
Greek • classics into their own
tongue and added huge commen-
taries to them. The Arabs as-
similated the learning and folk-
lore of India and became a means
for trahsmitting them to the
western world. They wrote works
on geography and history which
are still invaluable records of
the thought of their time, as
well as of that of preceding
ages. One of their great teach-
ers, Avicenna in Persia, corn-
posed a Canon which is to this
day considered a milestone in the
advancement of Science. An-
other, Averroes, living at the
other end of their world, in
Spain, wrote books of philosophy
which, together with those of
Maimonides, t h e contemporary
Jew, changed the whole history
of western thought.

NEW YORK. - (Religious
News Service)-The Bible has
been edited from 3,000 to 300
pages by Peter V. Rose, in a new
book, "A Digest of the Bible,"
published by Prentice-Hall, Inc.
The new book, according to
its author, is a condensation of
the King Jame, Bible that "tells
its story in dear unbroken se-
quence" and offers to the reader
with minimum effort "a vivid
comprehensive picture of Scrip-
ture."
"If," Mr. Ross says, "you can
read 50 interesting pages in the
course of an evening, you can,
during the evenings of one busy
week, read the Bible - here
shaped to swiftly moving narra-
tive."
The publishers claim not a
single important episode is miss-
ing from the condensed Bible,
that the beauty and grandeur of
the King James version has been
preserved in "a simple and con-
tinuous narrative front Genesis
to Revelation."
Mr. Ross, who is a lawyer, by
profession. is described by the
publishers as "a well-known au-
thority and lecturer on the
Bible."
