The Tiberias Massacre

The worst massacre since the medieval
outrage of 1929 in Hebron occurred last
week in Tiberias.
Defenders of the Arabs, who have been
speaking the language of the Nazis, are
faced with the great responsibility of
accounting for the outrageous murder of
defenseless 21 people, 10 of whom were,
children of the ages of 1 to 13.
Moshe Shertok, head of the political
department of the Jewish Agency in
Jerusalem, is right when he states that
-it is useless to waste words in condemna-
tion of murderers of infants. But are we
to believe that it is equally as wasteful
to argue with the British government
that the arming of Jews for self-defense
is an absolute necessity at this time?
The horrible massacre in Tiberias pro-
vides most convincing proof that Great
Britain is responsible for the troubles be-
cause of procrastination and failure to
provide adequate defense. In view of
the fact that the Jewish settlement in
Palestine offers to recruit its own de-
fenders provided permission for it is
granted by the government, reasonable
excuse is totally for failure to comply
with such an elementary request for self-
defense. .
Palestine Jewry must be given a chance
to defend itself! And it must be given
that chance before it is too late!
But an even greater massacre threatens
Palestine.
The reports from London 'and Jeru
salem, to the effect that a new "betrayal'
is about to be perpetrated against th e
Jews, is the most horrifying specter of all

PURELY COMMENTARY

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

Is a "Better World" Possible?

The question on which sociologists differ most
is that affecting human nature. The left wing
elements insist that human nature can be im-
proved and can be molded to be decent and kind,
but there are a- great many people who find it
impossible to adopt such an attitude.'
It is generally assumed by those who are lacking
in faith that human nature is corrupt and that
it is a vain hope to believe that human beings can
be molded for kindness and for humane judgment
and dealings.
It is interesting in this connection to study state-
ments that were made on this question by some of
the most eminent men of our day. A short time
ago a five thousand year Time Capsule was de-
posited by the Westinghouse Electric Company at
the site of the New York World Fair at a depth
of 50 feet for opening on Sept. 23, 6939 (the
year 10699 on the Jewish calendar). This capsule
contains letters by Dr. Albert Einstein, Dr. Thomas
Mann and Dr. Robert A. Milliken who give their
opinions of present day civilization to those who
will inhabit this earth 5,000 years from now. Ac-
companying these letters is a statement to poster-
ity by Grover A. Whalen, president of the World
Fair.
Most significant is the letter of Dr. Mann in
which he states:

serve murderous states. What hope can there
be for mankind if the hearts and minds of the
young people are being corrupted?
A most fascinating book has lust been published
by the Macmillan Co. in which Eva G. Connor
has compiled a series of letters to children which
the publishers issued under the title "Letters to
Children." In this book are to be found the letters
written by Chaucer, Erasmus. Luther, Voltaire,
kings and queens of England and France, Benja-
min Franklin, Samuel Johnson, George Washing-
top, Thomas Jefferson, Noah Webster, Beethoven,
Coleridge, Washington Irving, Macauley, Victor
Hugo, Emerson, Hawthorne, Lincoln, Tennyson,
Browning, Dickens. Mark Twain, and scores of
other great men in the world. It is interesting to
read sonic of the sentiments in these letters be-
cause they indicate the concern that some of these
great men had for decent human dealing,s as
barometers of the improvement of future relation-
ships among peoples. In a letter written by Lud-
wig Van Beethoven in 1812 to a young pianist,
he made a statement which ought to serve as an
admonition for his followers in Germany who play
his music but who do not know the spirit of this
man. Beethoven wrote more than 125 year sago:
el run know no other xupertority In man save that

long advocated by Julius Strei-
cher, high priest of Nazi anti-
Semitism, to make the world
aware of the Jewish problem.
