THE VOICE OF THE VATICAN

Of all the voices that spoke out during 5698 against the
rising tide of paganism, totalitarianism, racism and anti-
Semitism, the mightiest was that of Pope Pius XL From
the Holy See has come the most vigorous challenge to and
protest against all forms of religious and racial persecution.
Without resorting to diplomatic verbiage, the Vatican repeat-
edly during the past year fired one salvo after another in
defense of human rights. In a Christmas message the Pope
declared: "In Germany there is persecution so frightful, so
violently brutal, so insidious in its effects that it has seldom
been matched in the history of the world. What i- worse is
that this persecution is shrouded by falsehood. deceit and
denial, which cannot. however, wipe out its profound effects,
so vast geographically and so sorrowful morally." When
Hitler visited Rome, the Pope deplored the display of • the
swastika, declaring it is "certainly not Christ's cross." Later
in the year the Pope launched ■ worldwide Catholic kcam-
paign to combat racialism with the issuance of detailed in-
structions to Catholic educators in the form of an official
circular published by the Vatican's Congregation of Seminaries
and Universities ordering Catholic educators to refute and
oppose the Sari dogma of Aryan supTemacy. The circular
called the Aryan theory "absurd and pernicious." The day
ikebe
after Italy announced the adoption of Aryanism, the
issued a blast against "excessive nationalism,7 condemning it
as a "true form of apostasy." A few days later he again
attacked the "spirit of separatism and exaggerated nat, fal.
ism." callinv it "detestable." Catholicism, he said. "in uni-
versal. It is not racial nor is it nationalistic nor is it separa-
tistic." Ile also sent nersonal instructions to Cardinal Hinsley
in London to Provide for the needs of the widow and two
daughters of Heinrich Hertz, famous German-Jewish scientist.
who were livir' in poverty in England. Osservatore Romano,
the official Vatican organ, was equally outspoken. It assailed
anti-Semitisms as "brutal," "without juridical basis." an "aspect
of the fight provoked by the new paganism in large sections of
internal political life," and called racialism "the negation of

Christian civilization."
