WHAT EVERY 111UNO MAN SHOULD

!Inland Shapira. Published by
Knight, 111 Fourth Ave, New
York (81.60).

Those who have read the two
articles in The Detroit Jewish
Chronicle on "War Propaganda
and the Jews" by Harold Roland
Shapiro already know that this
author is capable for producing a
fine work. His "What Every
Young Man Should Know About
War" is splendid in every respect
and is the most effective bit of
propaganda against war and for
peace that this reviewer has seen
in more than a decade of study of
the efforts for peace.
Mr. Shapiro does not propa-
gandize. He simply quotes facts.

from an outstanding authority,
especially those who were engaged
in medical service during the
War.
The 15 pages of reference notes
indicate to what length Mr. Sha-
piro has gone to arrive at the
facts in the investigation he con-
ducted. Quotations from the medi-
cal department of the United
States Army, the University Hos-
pital Magazine, War Medicine,
Journal of American Medical As-
sociation, and numerous other
similarly authoritative sources
are used to give the answers to
the questions on what young men
should know about war.
An unusual tribute is paid the
author and his work by Knight
Publishers who state on the jacket
of this book: "If our reputation as
publishers were to stand or fall
on just one book, we should like
it to be this one. For here, in all

The publishers state: "This is
no pacifist manifesto. Nor is it a
treatise on war. Here, rather, is
an objective and intimate record
of what those who fought in the
World War experienced." But the
volume is more effective than a
pacifist memorandum. The an-
swer to vital questions are, as the
author says, like bullets that must
stay in the minds of the readers
and impress upon them the brutal-
ity of armed conflicts and the need
for peace.

"DIASPORA"

"Diaspora" is a Greek word
meaning "scattering," applied
specifically to the dispersion of
the Jews throughout the world.
The diaspora began with the
Jewish colonization of Alexandria
in 332 B.C.E. It has since spread
all over the world.
