This was 'the situation in Slot Springs, Arkansas, many years ago before any provision was made for the care of the indigent sick. Hardly a day passed when some co-religionist, crippled with rheumatism, helpless, arrived in the city; and it fell to the local rabbi to obtain medical aid, care, baths, and above all, funds to pro- vide for the maintenance of these dependent visitors. It was quite evident that the small resident Jewish community was not equal to the task. Three buildings, the hospital proper, the Charles Steinberg Clinic and the Nurses' Home, have been erected. The hospital's staff is composed of 32 prominent phy- sicians who serve without pay, and the hospital is ranked as class A by the American College of Surgeons.
