The past year has developed
an increase in tensions between
t he various religious groups in
America as a result both of
heightened economic tensions in
he United States and of con-
flicting opinions us to political
events or policies abroad. Never-
heless, the year has brought also
significant turn in inter-faith
relations that is gratifying to ev-
e ryone interested in the evolu-
ion of more civilized human 'T-
alons in America.
Most encouraging has been the
ncreasingly realistic approach to
nter-faith understanding adopted
y Christian and Jewish leaders.
1 ood will means more than the
occasional fraternizing of the
abbi, priest and minister; it is
"ore significant than a good-will
dlgrimage or an inter-faith in-
titute; it far transcends the

words of a resolution. Good will
is no parlor game. It is built of
sturdier stuff.

After 10 years of activity in
this field, the National Conference
of Jews and Christians is con-
vinced that there is maturing,
among the leaders of all faiths
an intellectual grasp of the prob-
lems involved in inter-group rela-
tions. For example, never before
in the history of Christianity have
Church councils been as outspoken
in word and deed against anti-
Semitism as during recent months
Moreover, the National Confer-
ence of Jews and Christians has
been successful in creating local
community techniques for the
moderation of tensions. Person-
al contacts between the leaders
of the various groups tend to
make for a more rational and
less emotional consideration of
the problems involved.

When the National Conference
was first founded 10 years ago,
there were some Jews and Chris-
tians who now little or no point
to its organization. This aloof
attitude has been discarded by
every thoughtful person who
knows the disastrous effects of
non-communication among Euro-
pean Catholics, Jews and Prot-
estants. Whereas the good will
movement may at one time have
been nurtured only on the broth-
erly spirit of true religion, it
now has taken cheep root in 'sea-
son as well as emotion in that
leaders realize that anti-Semit-
ism, anti-Catholicism, or anti- any
denomination, is simply a prelude
to anti-religion in general.
Churchmen are realizing that
the battle for survival is not be-
tween Catholics and Protestants,
Christian and Jew, or Baptist and
Methodist; the battle is between
the forces of religion and the
growing secularization, and in
some cases paganism, of modern
life. A community of religious
forces is being developed on a
confederation basis, that is: the
religious forces work together on
matters of general interest while
individually maintaining their au-
tonomy and distinct doctrines.
Such a trend is noticeable in
Christianity in the formation of_i
the World Council of Churche4
and Jewry has indicated a similar
interest in the subject in that
there has been a move in this
country for the strengthening of
the Synagogue Council of Amer-
ica, the Federation of the Re
form, Conservative and Orthodox
groups.
With such sentiment prevailing,
it is obviously necessary that it
feeling of good will, a desire for
better understanding and a real
effort for co-operation should be
the animating spirit of the day.
The contribution within the next
few years of the National Con-
ference to the furtherance of this
trend will be in the direction of
supplying the raw materials of
basic truths necessary for a bet-
ter understanding of differences
and the meeting ground upon
, which prejudices can be resolved.
Our efforts will be directed to-
wards making America safe for
mizing of what we hold in com-
mon and the tasks we must work
differences. But our differences
must not be stressed

to the mini-
Upon together.

A floppy and Prosperous Neu' Fear to All

The tact that Democracy is be-
ing challenged by the Authoritar-
ian State (Nazism and Commu-
nism) is more evident to the man
on the street each (lay. As a re-
sult, many men and women who
have been ignorant of or indif-
ferent to the fact that intoler-
ance between groups exists have
come to realize that this intoler-
ance is the handmaid of totali-
tarianism, and is the means used
to sow the seed of hatred which
is an essential forerunner of the
establishment of a dictatorship.
I believe that just as when a
healthy body is attacked by a dis-
ease there is set in motion within
the body counter bodies to kill
the disease germs, similarly in
the body politic, the disease of in-
tolerance creates counter forces
working towards good will and
better understanding.
It is our duty to aid all in-
dividuals and organizations work-
ing for good will. PersonallY,
believe the most effective of all
are the churches and synagogues;
that is, the forces of organized
religion.
