SERIES OF ARTICLES ON PALESTINE
BY KNICKERBOCKER WILL START IN
THE DETROIT TIMES NEXT MONDAY
1,000 YOUTHS BACK
IN TEMPLE SCHOOL

A stream of children varying
from tots of the age of 4 cling-
ing- to the hands of their parents
or older brothers and sisters, to
young men and women of the age
of 18, made its way toward Tem-
ple Beth El, Woodward and Glad-
stone, last Saturday and Sunday
mornings.
The confirmation department,
or grades 7, 8 and 9, resumed
classes on Saturday morning,
while the rest of the school from
the pre - kindergarten grade
through the senior high school
class met on Sunday morning.
One thousand children gathered
in the numerous class-rooms and
the large assembly halls of the
Temple. They were greeted by
special opening addresses by Rab-
bi Leon Frain.
Their first project was to Pre-
pare for the children's service
held in the main auditorium of
the Temple on Yom Kippur after-
noon. Members of the confirma-
tion class of 1939 are to lead that
service. A feature of that service
is the annual Yom Kippur story
by Rabbi Fram.
Registration for new pupils is
still being kept open. Parents
must come with their children for
registration, and they may come
only on week days during regular
office hours. No registrations are
taken on Saturdays or Sundays.
.The school of adult education,
Beth El College of Jewish Studies,
which is an important part of the
Temple educational system, usu-
ally opens at the end of the fall
Holy Days. It will open this year
on Monday night, Oct. 24, with
many new courses and several
new faculty members.
The current number of the
magazine Religious Education
contains an article by Rabbi
Frain on "The Educational Value
of Current Experience."'

H. R. Knickerbocker, Pulitzer
Prize winner and the best in-
formed correspondent in the for-
eign field today, has just com-
pleted a month-long study at first
hand of the new "Revolt in the
Desert"—the bloody, unpublicised
Arab-Jewish warfare in the Holy
Land.
Knickerbocker weighs the ques-
tion of the future of the Jewish
people in a remarkable series of
articles, "War in the Holy Land,"
the first of which will appear
Monday in the Detroit Times.
Will the Jewish people be for-
ever homeless?
Will a national home in Pal-
estine succeed?
Will the Jewish people win
their battle for freedom?
Knickerbocker gives decided
views on these questions—views

he is qualified to give because he
visited in the Holy land spots
rarely seen by foreigners—wit-
nessed massacre and destruction,
interviewed high and low.

Ile found the Palestine Jewish
people mobilised and armed be-
hind barbed wire to preserve al-
' most the lust sanctuary of the

March 12th Set
for Expulsion
of Italian Jews

ROME (WNS)—The appoint-
ment of tFulvioJ SOVich, Italian
ambassador to the United States,
as head of the Reunione Adriatica
of Trieste, one of Italy's two big-
gent insurance companies, in place
of Arnaldo Frigessi di Rattalma,
a Jew, who was forced to resign
as a result of the new anti-Sem-
itic policy, is reported to be the
first step in the ultimate elimina-
tion of Suvich from public *life
because of the fact that he too
is said to be a Jew or of Jewish
origin. At the same time Edgard°
Marpurge, World War hero, was
removed as head of the Assicura-
zioni Generale of Venice, the
country's largest insurance com-
pany, and replaced by Count
Guiseppe Volpi, former minister
of finance.
Meanwhile, King Victor Eman-
uel, long regarded as a friend of
the late Nahum Sokolow, put his
signature to the gabinet decree
of Sept. 1 ordering, the expulsion
within six months of all Jews
who settled in Italy since Jan. 1,
1919. The decree sets March 12,
1939 as the deadline for compli-
ance with the decree.
The Italian-Jewish weekly, vie-
rael", reports that the Union of
Italian Jewish Communities has
decided to set up courses in agri-
culture in every Hebrew school
and to give every Jewish boy and
girl over 13 training in handi-
crafts and mechanics in anticipa-
tion of new decrees excluding
Jews from the professions. "Is-
rael" declares that the execution
of this re-training program is
handicapped by lack of funds be-
cause the Italian government re-
fuses to allow Italian Jews to
receive financial aid from abroad.

All concerned about the future
of world Jewry will find in Knick-
erbocker's series authoritative in-
formation which cannot be other-
wise than of outstanding impor-
tance and interest.
Begin Monday to read Knicker-
bocker's revealing series—in the
Detroit Times.
