Chester Schwartz In Congress Race; Fights Dictators JUDGE THOMAS C. MURPHY he is recommended unqualifiedly JEWISH HOSPITAL SURVEY “ONCLUDED ?R(\M PACE ONE) ber of deaths from cancer, dia- betes, heart disease. and other degenerative diseases, and a high- er number of deaths from appen- dicitis, child birth, and from con- tagious diseases. These are im- portant factors in determining the type of hospital service a com- munity requires. Detroit's death rate for all forms of tuberculosis is 65.5 per 100,000 population- the second lowest of the 10 larg- est cities, for cancer death rate it is 89.3, for diabetes it is 22.1, and for degenerative diseases it is 316.6-all the lowest of the 10 largest cities. It is obvious that many more instances of death occur in the older age groups, and where a population has a small number of old people, the death rate would be lower. This fact is borne out by actual experience. Effects of Age on Births Then, also, it is expected that the birth rate of a younger-popu- lation should be higher-as is the case in Detroit, which has 16.2 births per 1,000 as against 13.4 for New York City, 13.7 for Chicago, 14.6 for Philadel- phia, 13:5 for Los Angeles, 15.4 for Cleveland, 15.2 for St. Louis, 15.7 for Baltimore, 19:6 for Bos- ton and 17.7 for Pittsburgh. The result is that the excess of births over deaths in Detroit is 7.2 per 1,000. Effects of Age on Morbidity Age distribution as it affects morbidity is not as great as that of mortality, but the sickness rate per 1,000 people tends to increase with age. Since Detroit has a small old age group, it is easy to understand the reason why the c ity has not particularly suffered n past years from its low ratio of beds to population, which, in 1937, was only 4.5 (all types of beds) and 3.2 (general beds for acute illnesses) per 1,000 of the 1,668 beds, or 24 per cent. are distributed among seven hospi- tals as follows: one with 18 beds for alcholic patients, and six with 1,225 beds for tuberculosis Pa- tients and 425 beds for patients with contagious diseases. Among the 42 Hospitals, four are governmental with 2,382 beds, equal to 33.5 per cent of the to- tal; 27 are voluntary with 4,272 beds, equal to 60.2 per cent of the total; and 11 are proprietary with 438 beds or 6.3 per cent Of the total. Distribution According to Sine The 42 hospitals included the following groups: (a) Eleven large voluntary fInd . city hospitals, each of which has a capacity of over 100 beds. Their total ca- pacity is 3,962 beds or 80 per I cent of the general beds and 56 -i per cent of the total capacity (all beds) for Detroit. They admitted 114,800 patients in 1937 out of 149,162 patients, or 77 per cent of the entire number of hospital admissions. (b) Thirteen voluntary hospi- tals, each of which has a capacity under 100 beds. Their total ca- pacity is 659 beds; they admitted 9.8 per cent of all patients. (6) Nine proprietary hospitals with 391 beds or 5.5 per cent of all beds; they admitted 6,736 pa- tients or 3.9 per cent of all ad- missions. Nine proprietary hospitals (c) and marine hospitals serving re- stricted groups. Their capacity is 2,080 beds, or 29 per cent of all beds, and they admitted 13,989 patients or 9.3 per cent of all ad- missions. The average bed utilization for all hospitals was 83 per cent in 1937. On the two special census days, Feb. 9, 1938, and April 7, 1938, the hospitals over 100 beds each had a bed occupancy of 86 per cent on each of these days. The hospitals under 100 beds each had a bed occupancy of 78 per cent and 87 per cent respectively. The proprietary hospitals had a bed occupancy of 87 and 81 per cent respectively. to the voters for retention in of- fice. Major Bernhard Friedlander, Med.-Res.
