"HECHALUTZ

The revival of crude militarism
its most blatant form has,
unfortunately, not been met with
sufficient firmness by democratic
countries, which has resulted in
the constant retreat of the latter
before this advancing, devouring
flame. In the midst of this world
chaos, Jewry, caught in the whirl-
pool of hatred and conflicting in-
terests, searches blindly for a
means by which it can keep on
the surface. The sad and bitter
experiment in the direction of
assimilation has brought a reali-
zation to a small section of Jew-
ish youth that this path is a cul-
de-sac and only weakens the pow-
ers of resistance at a time when
every atom of strength is re-
quired.
The need for a national renais-
sance has made itself felt in this
small, progressive faction and has
resulted in the crystallization of
a plan of action, the success of
which alone depends on the revo-
lutionary character of this plan.
At last, after years of relentless
persecution and abnormal exist-
ence the need for an internal
revolution in Jewry has passed
the stages of theory and is find-
ing nractical translation among
the youth in the form of the
Ilechalutz movement. The unique
s"nthesis of pure nationalism
and socialist ideology is the very
life blood of Hechalutz and the
collective and co-operative settle-
ment in Palestine is the fusion of
this ideology and practice.
Let us survey the background
from which this revolutionary
force has sprung. In the latter
part of the 19th century and the
beginning of the 20th century
Jewishyouth in Russia became
steeped in pronessive movements
which were fighting for the liber-
ation of the peasantry from the
yoke of the Czarist regime. The
wave of nationalism which had
swept Europe resulted in the
foundation of the Zionist move-
ment by Theodor Herz!. The
failure of the abortive Russian
revolution of 1905 and the split-
ting into two factions in the
Zionist camp came as a terrible
catostrophe to the youth whose
lives had been bound up in these
ventures. The terrible disillu-
sionment which followed this pe-
riod produced the soil from which
the Hechalutz movement took
root, for the years 1905 to
1914 saw a group of young pio-
neers leave for Palestine equipped
with those ideals for which they
had fought in Russia. The Great
War temporarily suspended fur-
ther immigration to Palestine but
in 1919 the organized movement
of Hechalutz under the leader-
ship of Joseph Trumpeldor began
its wonderful career in its fight
for the emancination of Jewry
by the transformation of middle-
class life into one of productiv-
ity and creativeness.
Within 20 years a country of
social equality and infinite spir-
itual wealth has been built up.
Starving Jews from Germany,
Poland and other European coun-
tries have been trans - lanted from
the labyrinth of despair to life
of freedom and justice.
The solitical horizon is over-
cast with black clouds waiting
to shower down more destruction
and havoc on earth and the ques-
tion predominant in our minds
at present is "What rortion on
earth will receive the next de-
luge?" Jewish conscience has
again been disturbed by recent
events in Austria. English Jew-
ry will again be taxed by an-
other "Relief Fund." Unfortu-
nately, the lessons of Germany,
Poland and now Austria are not
sufficient to move assimilated
Anglo-Jewry into more positive
action. Our only hope lies in
the growing consciousness of
Anglo-Jewish youth to reality and
we await with baited breath to
see whether they, like their Euro-
pean counter art, will antitheti-
cally watch the anproaching dan-
gers or decide to make a move in
the right direction — towards
Chslutziuth and Labor Palestine.
The Ilabonim movement in
England is showing promise of
moving more closele to Eretz
Yisrael. From their ranks have
come the pioneers of English He-
chalets. This is one indication
that from the Jewish youth in
England is beginning to generate
the spark of revolution. The
