Austria until a short time ago, pleading
that the writers be given an opportunity
to emigrate and to settle elsewhere. These
letters represent the height of tragedy
for the Jewish people and serve as a chal-
lenge for those who express sympathy
with their plight and who are in position
to help them.
There are already many Detroiters who
have brought over their families from
overseas and who are providing for them
as amply as they possibly can. These peo-
ple can not possibly be expected to do
more than they have done. But there
are thousands of Jews who do not
have such obligations, who have no direct
burdens and who are at the same time as
deeply touched by the existing crisis as
are those with relatives and friends over-
seas. These people have an opportunity
to do a great humanitarian piece of work
by helping the unfortunates who are
showering the community with letters beg-
ging to be taken out of the European in-
ferno.
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle makes this
appeal to men and women With means:
If you are in position, please indicate
to us your desire to sign affidavits which
will enable one, or two or more people
to come to this country. You must be
prepared to do something more for them
when they get here—you must help pro-
vide for them for a time until they are
settled and are made to feel at home here.
This is a call to those of means to be
merciful and to help their unfortunate
fellow-Jews. Please act at once!

Cabaret July 28

The League for Labor Pales-
tine has made plans for a unique
garden cabaret to be held Thurs-
day evening, July 28, at the
home and garden of Dr. and Mrs.
A. W. Sanders, 12342 Broad-
street Blvd. The entire garden
and grounds of the Sanders resi-
dence will be converted into a
gayly lighted and attractively
decorated setting, with tables at
which guests may sit to enjoy
the "floor show." "-Irt the event
of inclement weather, the entire
program will be moved indoors.

PURELY COMMENTARY

fly PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

"Whether- or Not to Be a Jew"

Arthur Hays Sulzberger, publisher of the New
York Times, has let it be known in an interview
with the Jewish Press of Omaha, Neb., that if
a Jewish State should be established in Palestine
it would raise the question of "whether or not
I should continue to be a Jew."
Mr. Sulzberger is the brilliant publisher of a
great newspaper—in fact, the best newspaper in
the world. But that does not make him so
powerful in control of his own destinies. Let him
ask Sambo who refused to pay dues to his or-
ganization, the Mystic Knights of Everywhere,
and who gave as his reason, "I done resigned
from the Colored People." "But your resignation
ain't been accepted," was the reply of the King-
pin of the order.
No, no, Mr. Sulzberger, you are imagining
things when you believe that you can solve your
problem for yourself so easily. Resides, if you
should choose the democratic method of having
the people voice its opinion as to whether or
not it desires a Jewish State, you would un-
doubtedly be in a minority. If a Jewish State
can solve the problem even for a handful of the
millions of our downtrodden fellow-Jews, then
it shall be a Jewish State—or several Jewish
States if possible. The trouble is not that such
a solution is not desired but that the Christian
world begrudges breathing space for those who
are ready to pioneer such new adventures.

view, if all men are brothers, whys can not people
of the same religious denomination feel a bit
closer to each other? Is all fraternalism dead
and must it be sacrificed for a narrow national-
ism of the type which is today writing a chapter
of modern history in blood and ruin?
The publisher of the New York Times does not
stop at this, but accepts the viewpoint that Ameri-
can Jews should not meddle in internal . affairs
of Poland or Germany. We refer hint to the
pages of his own paper for a splendid refutation
of this opinion which was incorporated in a long
letter written by the late Dr. Max Kohler. The
tradition of Americanism belies the view ex-
pressed by Mr. Sulzberger. We recommend to
the publisher of the greatest newspaper in the
world the opinion of a great philo-Semite, Os-
wald Garrison Villard, whose recent tribute to
the late Mr. Justice Benjamin Nathan Cardozo
ought to serve as a rebuke to Mr. Sulzberger and
those who think like him. What Mr. Villard
wrote proves, also, that the great Supreme Court
Justice also disagreed with Mr. Sulzberger. We
quote the closing paragraphs from Mr. Villard'a
tribute to Cardozo:
