The newest ideas in beauty,
luxury and utility, surpassing
anything heretofore known in
outdoor swimming pools, will be
found in Knollwood's new pool
which will be of thrown
open to the members this Sunday,
July 3, by Jim Ellmann, president
of the club . . . Behind that for-
mal and cursory announcement
lies the thrilling tale of a man's
devotion to an ideal . . . and his
sacrifices and struggles to guide
that ideal over the rocky road of
transformation to realization . .
When Morrie Schwartz first pro-
posed a swimming pool for Knoll-
wood, the suggestion was enthusi-
astically received by some of the
members while others opposed it.
Jim was among those "agin" it
. Submitted to a vote, a major-
ity of the members favored the
project . . . Jim, who always
yields to majority rule, withdrew
his objections and became one of
its most ardent proponents .. .
Then came the recession . . .
money was scarce . . . some of
. the members thought that per-
'haps it would be wiser to post-
pone the idea until economic con-
ditions improved but they didn't
know their prey , Ile was de-
termined that the pool would be
built this year ... but how? Ilin-
dered by cruel words of discour-
agement and despair, his indomi-
table faith manifested itself by
crying outihat the pool not only
can be but will be built . . .
Pleading convincingly, he stirred
the membership into a frenzied
enthusiasm which was translated
in action . . . with the aid and
co-operation of such Knollwood
stalwarts as Morrie Aronsson, fry
Blumberg, Nate florin, Iry Dwor-
man, Bill Isenberg, Sam Kavanau,
Fred Klein, Sam Keywell, Morrie
Schwartz, Lester Lapides, and
many others, who labored loyally
and many long hours devising
plans, checking details and rais-
ing money so that the pool could
be completed in time for this
summer's use and enjoyment .
We can now write "30" at the
end of a most interesting chapter
in the club's history ... So when
you go out to Knollwood this
Sunday to see the pool formally
opened . .. and see Jim Ellmann
smile and beam at you ... you'll
know that his is a smile of satis-
faction . . . the kind of a satis-
faction that comes from a job
well done!

A thought that had possessed Professor Hermann Schapiro suddenly

Impelled him to leave his study in search of a tinsmith. A strange
arithmetical theqry had given him an idea which he sought immediately
to put into practice.

'We dream of Zion," he had thought, "and we complain' that our poor
people have not the energy to redeem the soil of Eretz Israel. But is
that true? If of the to million Jews is the world each would contribute
only ■ pfennig every day, that would amount annually to 365 times
tfropoo Marks — en enormous fortune that would solve the problem
without difficulty."

Professor Schapiro was not only a well known mathematician. but also a
min of action. "Please make me a tin box," he instructed the craftsman,
'and (tamp on it the worth 'Jewish National Fund'—"

And from that day on he dropped a pfennig In the box every day and
so planted the seed of a great worldwide organisation. His dream has
not yet been realized ; but the Box pfennigi have grown to an amount
of E8o0,000, a suns sufficient to acquire the land of the broad Valley of
Jared, on which today 35 flourishing settlements are established.

One million blue-white Boxes of the Jewish National Fund have been
distributed In Jewish homes, Does the Blue Box occupy a place of honour

Catherine Goldsmith recently
received a new outfit of clubs ...
a gift from friend hubby ... The
12 shiny clubs made an imposing
collection and Leo, who hoped
that they would improve her game,
was dismayed when one day his
spouse said, "Dear, I have to have
a lesson. I can't use these clubti
at all." So they went out to the
practice tee where Leo was going
to teach Catherine how to play
golf (such an aspiration for such
a shlemiehl!) ... After an hour's
drilling in pointing out such com-
mon flaws as looking up, coming
back too fast, standing to far
ahead of the ball, not pivoting ,
too much right hand, etc., Katy
was given a T. O. and now Prof.
Feibig (so, he's an improvement?)

Do Christians Want
Convert Jews?

to

To the question: "Do Chris-
tians want to convert Jews to
Christianity?" the following ans-
wer is given by a Christian spokes-
man:
"In general, yes. And Roman
Catholics want to convert Protes-
tants to Catholicism; and Protes-
tants to convert Catholics to Pro-
testantism. The missionary spirit
is of the essence of Christianity.
Protestants and Catholics, each
believing themselves to possess
spiritual treasures that others do
not have, are impelled to share
them with their fellows. This
need not impair human relations
provided that each group, in seek-
ing to convert others to their be-
liefs, respect those with whom
they differ, are as ready to learn
as they are to teach, and rely
only upon spiritual measures, im-
posing no discrimination upon
those who continue to disagree
with them and offering no in-
ducement of an unspiritual na-
ture to those who will respond
favorably to their appeal. Jews
now make no attempt to convert
RABBI SOLOMON GOLDMAN Christians, though Judaism was
once a missionary religion."
