the referendum and the elections
of the American Jewish Congress,
and ranged themselves in opposi-
tion to the viewpoint expressed
by Dr. Samuel H. Goldenson of
Temple Emanu-El in a sermon
Preached May 28.
Rabbi Israel Herbert Levinthal
of the Brooklyn Jewish Center.
Rabbi Israel Goldstein of Con-
gregation Bnai Jeshurun, and
Rabbi Louis I. Newman of Tem-
ple Rodeph Sholom upheld the
necessity of creating a unified
agency for the defense of Jewish
rights, such as is being sought
by the American Jewish Congress,
condemned Dr. Goldenson's at-
tempt to identify the defensive
movement of the Congress with
a separatist, political movement,
and urged American Jewry to
unite for the defense of Jewish
rights.

Speaking from the pulpit of
Bnai Jeshurun last Saturday
morning, Rabbi Goldstein scored
Dr. Goldenson and others who
have termed the referendum of
the American Jewish Congress a
"Hitler plebiscite" and asserted
that there can hardly be a dif-
ference of opinion as to the desir-
ability "that there should be a
renresentative body to speak for
American Jewry in matters af-
fecting the Jewish people." Rabbi
Goldstein pointed out that for
more than 75 years we have had
such bodies in the United States.
He recalled that as early as 1859,
the Board of Delegates of the
American Israelites was organized
to protect the civic rights of Jews
at home and abroad, that this
body received the recognition of
the American government and
acted on a number of important
occasions involving the rights of
Jews at home and abroad. The
American Jewish Committee, he
recalled, was formed in 1906 for
the purpose of protecting the
civil and reilgious rights of Jews.
Preaching on Monday morning
at the Brooklyn Jewish Center,
Rabbi Levinthal, one of the
outstanding members of the con-
servative rabbinate in the United
States, pointed out that if it is
right for organizations like the
American Jewish Committee and
the Bnai Brith to exist. "if these
leaders in the social and'economic
structure of Jewish life have the
right to organize and to help
their fellow Jews, what wrong is
there for the great masses also
to unite and to give their coun-
sel, their cooperation, even their
substance to help their fellow
Jews?"

—Nazi organizations are destroy-

This viewpoint was set forth in
messages to Dr. Stephen S. Wise,
as president of the American
Jewish Congress, the organiza-
tion which has taken the initiative
in mobilizing the Jews of America
to defend the rights of their fel-
low Jews now so greatly im-
perrilled. The American Jewish
Congress, founded among others,
by the Hon. Louis D. Brandeis,
this month marks the 20th anni-
versary of its establishment and
will seek to create the united
democratic front against anti-
Semitism when on June 25, 26
and 27 every adult Jew is sum-
moned to come to the polls and
elect throughout the country 400
delegates to an extraordinary
session, the purpose of which will
be to devise a program to com-
bat anti-Semitism.
Among those who have sent
messages to the Jewish Congress
are the following from Michigan:
Cong. John D. Dingell, Cong.
John Luecke, Cong. George D.
O'Brien. Cong. Jesse P. Wolcott,
Cong. Roy 0. Woodruff.

ADDRESS

Answering the attack of Dr.
Goldenson, Rabbi Levinthal said
he was simply re-echoing all the
arguments used against the first
American Jewish Congress 20
years ago, "like Rip Van Winkle,
the distinguished rabbi has been
asleep to all reality and the
changes of life the past few
decades have brought about."
He vigorously condemned Dr.
Goldenson's statement that the
action of the American Jewish
Congress to create an all-inclusive
body aims at political separatism.
Defending the purposes of the
American Jewish Congress and
denying its intention as charged
by Dr. Goldenson to create a
political body in Jewish life,
Rabbi Louis I. Newman of Tem-
ple Rodeph Sholom called- Rabbi
Goldenson's statement a misrep-
resentation of the purposes of
the referendum.

Answer by Lipsky

Louis Lipsky, vice-president of
the American Jewish Congress,
speaking at the Capitol Hotel, be-
fore 2,000 representatives of
Jewish organizations in the Man-
hattan area. Charged Dr. Golden-
son with injecting obsolete doc-
trinal controversy based on no
actual facts in opposing the demo-
cratic elections and referendum
of the American Jewish Congress.
Ile repudiated the charges Dr.
Goldenson made last Saturday in
a widely publicized sermon that
the - American Jewish Congress is
Promoting disunity in Jewish life,
and upholding the racial philos-
ophy of Adolf Hitler.
Mr. Lipsky charged that it has
become necessary to hold a ref-
erendum on June 25, 26 and 27,
because of the world-wide attack
upon the rights of Jews and the
refusal of the leadership of agen-
cies such as the American Jewish
Committee, the Bnai Brith and
the Jewish Labor Committee to
agree to a form of cooperation.
What is being proposed, in the
light of the attack upon the rights
of Jews. Mr. Lipsky asserted "is
not 'an ave-,ay based '---.doctrine
and definitions authorized 'to
speak for Jews,' but an organiza-
tion to act in defense of Jewish
rights threw... 401 here and abroad.
so that Jews themselves may ef-
fectively contribute to the de-
struction of prejudice. to the
Preservation of the spirit of
democracy, to the preparation for
the coming days of peace and
brotherhood: so that Jews may
be the active instruments of their
liberntion, instead of the passive
victims of a recurrent barbarism."
