Detroit Jewry's unprecedented success
in the 1938 Allied Jewish Campaign will be
celebrated at a victory dinner at 6:301p. m.
Wednesday, June 1, at Hotel Statler. Reser-
vations for the dinner should be made,at once
by calling Columbia 1600.
When final reports are submitted at this
rally, it is expected that the full quota of $390,700 will
have been raised. At the present writing, based on the
reports submitted at the.final meeting of workers at Hotel
Statler on Friday, May 20, the amount rnised is $375,356
or 96 per cent of the goal. This sum is $25,000 larger
than any fund raised in previous Jewish relief drives.
LONDON (WNS-Palcor Agen-
cy)—Implementation of the Pal-
estine Mandate until such time as
a final settlement is agreed upon
was demanded by the English
Zionist Federation in one of a
series of unanimously adopted res-
olutions at its 38th annual con-
vention. The Federation insisted
that Jewish immigration be per-
mitted in accordance with the eco-
nomic capacity of the country and
Jewish needs; reaffirmed the aim
of Zionism as the establishment of
a Jewish State in Palestine; re-
corded with sorrow the .loss of
lives as a result of terrorism; ex-
pressed admiration for the Yishuy
in self-defense; opposed the po-
litical high level for immigration;
expressed regret at the arbitrary
immigration restrictions; and in-
sisted that the Jewish National
Home is the only permane t solu-
tion of the Jewish ques o .
The convention endDbYSeelld the
decision of the Actions Commit-
tee for a Mifdei Zioni fund and
appealed to English Jews for self-
denial for a week, beginning Shab-
uoth, thereby manifesting solidar-
ity with the Yishuv. Lady Read-
ing, who presided at the session,
made a striking appeal for the
new Zionist self-taxation fund and
urged that each one contribute
six days' earnings to the Mifdei
Zioni. She announced that £10,-
000 ($50,000) had been contrib-
uted to the fund by the Marks
family.

Dr. Stephen S. Wise. president
of the American Jewish Congress,
will be the speaker at the nomi-
nating convention of the Detroit
chapter of the Congress on Tues-
day evening, May 31, at 7 o'clock,
at Cass Technical High School.
Because Dr. Wise must be
back in New York on Wednes•
day morning and may therefore
have to leave the nominating
convention in time to make the
9:05 train, he will speak
promptly at 7:30 o'clock. It
is urged therefore that all regis•
tared voters be in their seats at
Cas s High School by 7 p. m., in
time for the opening of the
session.
A call has been issued to all
organizations to elect delegates--
one for every 60 members — to
participate. in the selection of the
candidates who will be voted upon
at the national popular election
on June 26, 26 and 27. These
delegates must register either at
the office of the Congress, 1044
Penobscot Bldg., Cherry 6669, or
prior to the nominating conven-
tion at Cars High/School on Tues-
day evening.
Although only accredited dele-
gates will have the right to vote
in the selection of nominees, ad-
mission to the nominating con-
vention will be open tp all who
have registered for the Congress
election, upon presentation of
their registration certificates at
Cass High School.
36,000 Certificates Out
With more than 35,000 regis-
tration certificates already dis-
tributed and more than 150 or-
ganizations enrolled in'behalf of
the popular elections, Detroit offi-
cers' of the Congress expect an
overflow attendance at the Cass
High School demonstration for
Jewish unity, and believe that
more than 10,000 will cast their
ballots in the popular elections in
June.
At the nominating convention
on Tuesday, the front portion of
the Cam High School auditorium
will be roped off for delegates. A
housing committee headed by El-
conan II. Saulson and Other Gold-
dates for the June elections to
the Congress, the nominating con-
vention will also act on several
important resolutions which will
serve as instructions to the dele-
gates who will represent Detroit
at the sessions of the American
Jewish Congress in September.
Representatives of Detroit or-
ganizations are urged to report
on the sale of registration certifi-
cates at once and to make every
effort to enroll all Detroit Jews
for the Congress elections.
Organizations desiring speakers
to enlighten their members on the
purposes of the popular referen-
dum should call the Congress of-
flee, Cherry 6559.
Sol Weitz was elected treasur-
er of the special elections com-
mittee.
Synagogue Appeals
In addition to the appeals made
before local organizations, special
calls for the enlistment of Detroit
Jewry for the Congress elections
will be sounded during Shevuoth
services in all congregations, by
rabbis and laymen.
Addresses in behalf of the Con-
gress are being delivered over all
Detroit radio stations. Last Sun-
day Mandell Bernstein spoke over
Station CKLW. Over the same
station, • Lawrence W. Crohn de-
livered an address on Wednesday.
Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka will speak
over CKLW this Sunday, May 29,
from 5:45 to 6 p. m. Additional
broadcasts are being arranged by
Rabbi Sperka as chairman of the
radio committee.
A stirring appeal for the Con-
gress elections was delivered by
Rabbi Sperka on Monday ove r
Station WWJ. Other addresses
are scheduled over local stations
for the next week.
In order to mobilize sentiment

Threaten Jews Remaining
in Austria After 1942
with Slavery
In a six-c 9 lumn despatch from
Paris from a staff correspondent
the New Y rk Times on Monday
published s t rtling revelations of
the Nazi terrorism in Vienna.
The report, which indicates that
organized Nazi horrors continue
to be perpetrated secretly, and
which reviews two months of vio-
lence, opens with the following
statement:
"There probably ■ are Ameri-
cans now planning summer
tours in Europe who are con•
■ idering the inclusion of a visit
to the Austria of pleasant
memories.
"Some of them may still go
there, but they should be
warned in advxnce that the
laughter-loving country they
knew no longer exists."
Near the conclusion of that
famous and amazing dispatch re-
porting in great detail the organ-
ized Nazi terrorism, sadism and
brutality in Vienna the corres-
pondent quotes the disappointed
and surprised wife of a Vienna
grocer: "This is not what I joined
the party for. I expected that they
would shut down the shop of that
dirty Jewish competitor of mine
across the street and that they
have done, but I never thought
they would ruin all my best Jew-
ish customers."
