cently made another contribution
to the teaching of Ilebrew by cre-
ating a library for adults under
the title "Bibliotheko Du-Leshon-
ith"—"The Bi-Lingual Library"—
which accomplishes a double pur-
pose: It helps popularize the works
of the outstanding Jewish writers
and serves as an excellent self-
teacher in Hebrew. It is a novel
creation. The story itself appears
at the right hand of every page,
with a maximum of four words to
the line. The English translation
appears to the left. Anyone with
a smattering of Hebrew who de-
sires to enrich his vocabulary at
last has at his disposal the ideal
type of teacher in these "Bi-Lin-
guar books. The works of Chaim
Nachman Bialik, David Shimono-
witz, Abraham Raisin, Achad Ha'.
am, H. D. Numberg, Yehudah
Steinberg, Niche Joseph Bardich-
evsky, David Frishman, G. Shut-
man, and other important classics
are already in circulation. Each
of these volumes opens with an in-
troduction in which the life and
work of the author is outlined—
also in bi-lingual fashion. Each of
these small volumes is a combina-
tion of text-book and pleasant
reading. It is without doubt
among the most valuable contri-
butions to modern Hebrew.
In a sense A. H. Friedland has
filled the greatest need in Jewish
life: he has given his people a
series of charming textbooks in
Hebrew for young and old, has
injected his own genius in the stor-
ies he has writen for the children
in "Sipurim Yofim" and has re-
vived interest in the works of some
of the best known Yiddish and Ile-
brew writers whose works are in-
corporated in the bi-lingual library.
He has already captured the imag-
ination of tens of thousands of
boys and girls through his "Sipu-
rim Yofim," and once his creation
of the "Du-Leshonith" library be-
comes known among the elders, he
is destined to be the idol of all
lovers of Hebrew,

The Hebrew textbook library
was enriched this week by the ap-
pearance of the fourth volume in
the series of "Gilenu—The Play
Way to Hebrew." Officially listed
as "Gilenu, Book Three," it is the
fourth book in the aeries, the Arst
one being listed as the Primer.
Authored jointly by Abraham H.
Friedland, director of the Bureau
of Jewish Education of Cleveland,
and by Dr. Emanuel Gamoran,
educational director of the Com-
mission on Jewish Education of
Cincinnati and of the Union of
American Hebrew Education, this
net of attractive and practical text-
books in Hebrew for youngsters
was published by the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations.
The fourth volume, "Gilenu, Book
Three," is a natural sequence to
the earlier books and is especially
suitable for advanced students who
have already mastered much He-
brew through the first books.
Together with this volume, a
pupil's exercise book was published
which is certain to prove of great
help to the pupil and will assist
the teacher in training the student
in writing as well as reading the
language.
The newest "Gilenu" accom-
plishes the purpose the authors
net out to introduce: to popularize
the Hebrew language, to create a
favorable attitude to its study, to
make the approach to teaching it
so fascinating that the child will
crave for further knowledge rather
than shun it as unpopular. This
volume definitely increases the
vocabulary of the student. While
it retains the original principle of
fun and play, through the method
adopted and the stories used, this
book nevertheless accomplishes the
task of making the study of the
language easy even for the older
child. It introduces through its
stories a study of all the holidays
on the Jewish calendar. Further-
more, it helps the child to acquire
"the elements of Hebrew gram-
mar which are basic to the study
