troit labor Zionist family, is a driver's assistant.
On the day of Ephraim Ticktin's murder we re-
ceived a brief note from him: "Today we had a
particularly exciting day. No shooting, just a
case of good old-fashioned American reckless driv-
ing on the part of the other fellow. with the result
that we sank chassis deep into a soft road shoul-
der, and after transferring most of the 114-metric
ton load of kerosene drums from our auto to
another, a government roller, working on road
repairs, towed us out. And that's the life, but let
me tell you, the economic development of this
country would be inconceivable without automo-
bile transportation, and, considering the length of
its recent economic history and the state of its
roads, there are automobile aplenty here."
Levi Shapiro, another popular Detroit boy who
was "the life of the party at Zionist gatherings,"
who was a leader in Hashomer Hatzair and a real
leader, is the general manager of Kibbutz Ameri-
ca's three heavy trucks. A half-ton Ford truck under
his supervision does duty in Ain Hashofet, formerly
known as Juara, named in honor of Justice Bran-
deis. Near this colony occurred the Ticktin-
Krongold tragedy.
Milton ("Bud") Marwil recently joined the Kib-
utz Aryeh, an orthodox co-operative community.
Other young Detroiters who are rendering yeo-
man services in Palestine as Chalutzim: Meyer
Harrison, Dorothy -Levin, Edith Levin, Mrs. Levi
Shapiro, Moshe Soloveichick, Ephraim Melamed,
Miriam and Ephraim Rivlin. The parents of the
Rivlins and Soloveichicks also joined their chil-
dren in Palestine.
Detroit's share in Palestine's upbuilding is
greater because of these pioneers.
We have reason to be proud of these brave boys
and girls.

Jews Who Refuse to Employ Jews
Before we raise our voices in protest against
non-Jews who refuse to employ Jews, we must
clean our own house and drive the enemy from
our own household through an expression of pub-
lic opinion.
There are too many Jews who offer the excuse
that demands imposed upon them by business con-
ditions force them to employ non-Jews. "Non-
Jews prefer to be waited on by non-Jews," some
of these self-hating Jews shamelessly try to ex-
plain.
They remind us of the signs now predominating
in stores that were once in Jewish hands in Ber-
lin and in Vienna but which have been transferred
to Aryans. They emphasize that ownership is
Aryan, that the employes are Aryan.
A recent cable to the New York Times by G, E.
R. Gedye, brilliant correspondent who was a vic-
tim of Ilitlevisni when he was expelled from Vienna
after 13 years of service there, contained an inter-
esting sentence that is applicable to this subject.
The cable was sent only a few days before the
expulsion order told him of his own fate. Mr.
Gedye wrote: "On one shop this correspondent
noticed the rather pathetic sign, 'ninety per cent
of our employes are Aiyan.' " The Jews who
discriminate against Jews in this city, in this
country, may just as well put this sign up in their
stores now. But let them remember that if—heav-
en forbid—the time ever comes when they will
have to display such self-degrading information
in their store windows, they themselves will not
be secure, and their business fate will hang in
the final balance.

A Service to Art
The National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods
annually renders a distinct service to art by pub-
lishing an Art Calendar which popularizes the
works of a Jewish artist. Last year the Sister-
hoods' Art Calendar featured the etchings of Max
Pollak. eminent Viennese artist who has exhibited
widely in this country, including Detroit. and in
several European countries. For 5699 the Sister-
hoods' Art Calendar will feature the airbrush
paintings of Louis Kabrin, 30-year-old New York
born artist who was educated in Cincinnati. Mr.
Kabrin has drawn the illustrations for two vol-
umes published by the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations. The six airbrush paintings included
in the new Art Calendar once again serve to em-
phasize the ability of this young man.
By bringing to public notice the works of noted
artists, the National Federation of Temple Sister-
hoods renders a service with its Art Calendars. It
not only produces a useful desk book with im -
portant Jewish dates but also helps to popularize
interesting art works and therefore makes a con.
tribution to the cause of art in a practical. edu-
cational way.
