George Jessell and Norma Talmadge At Fox This Week George Jessel and his wife, Norma Talmadge, are featured in the stage show at the Fox Theater this week. "Rebecca of Sunny- brook Farm" with Shirley Temple is the film attraction. George Albert Jesse! was born in New York City, April 3, 1898, son of Joseph and Charlotte, and was to the theater born. His father, a playwright, was the au- thor of "La Belle Marie," "A Re- markable Woman," and other dramas. His mother is now famil- iar to millions as the "Mama" of the famous Jesse! "Ilello, Mama" telephone monologues. George Jessel's first stage ap- pearance was at the age of nine, when he played the Imperial The- ater in New York's Harlem, with Walter Winchell and Eddie Can- tor. The act cohsisted of illus- trated songs and sketches. In 1925, Jessel went on the legiti- mate stage in "The Jazz Singer," which ran for three years. Ile played in "The War Song," which he wrote in collaboration with Sam and Bella Spewack. Jessel next played the title role in John Golden's production of "Joseph," following which he toured the country with Eddie Cantor. In 1 9 34 , he married Norma Tal- madge, former film star who now confines her public appearances to the George Jessel show, of which her husband is both pro- ducer and master of ceremonies. Downtown Theaters ADAMS — In "When G-Men Step In" brothers tangle in a crime melodrama having to do with a phone racket. CINEMA — In "Mayerling," Danielle Darrieux and Charles Boyer are the principals in a tragic romance in which an un- happy prince finds his romance with a pretty commoner frus- trated by the political dictates of royalty. MICIIIGAN — The Michigan Theater Easter show made its bow on Friday with Paramount's "Col- lege Swing" starring Martha Raye, Burns & Allen, Bob Hope, Edward Everett !torten, Ben Blue, Betty Grable and Jackie Coogan, On the Michigan stage are two per- sonal appearances, one from ra- dio and one from screen. The former is Tommy Riggs and his amazing Betty Lou; the other acts include the beloved little Spanky McFarland, the leader of the Our Gang Kids, and tiny star of "Trail of the Lonesome Pine." UNITED ARTISTS—Easter will be celebrated at the United Ar- tists Theater starting Thursday with Robert Montgomery and Vir- ginia Bruce in a gay story "The First Hundred Years," and a sup- porting cast including Warren William, Binnie Barnes and a host of others. MADISON—Walt Disney's roc- ord-breaking feature "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs romps merrily along into Easter week with a Detroit record of eight , weeks, six at the Madison, and I two previous at the United Ar- ! tists.
