World Leaders to Convene
Simultaneously with this an-
nouncement, the American Jewish
Congress made public that for the
first time in the history of the
American Jewish community, a
conference of Jewish leaders of
European communities has been
summoned in the United States to
discuss with American leaders a
program for the defense of the
Jewish status in Europe.
This conference will take the
form of a meeting of the adminis-
trative committee of the World
Jewish Congress, comprising rep-
resentatives of Jewish communi-
ties of Europe and Palestine. It is
expected that the conference will
take place in the early fall and
will be held in connection with the
first session of the American Jew-
ish Congress to be comprised of
delegates named as a result of the
democratic elections to be con-
ducted in June.
Decision with regard to the date
of these elections was reached at
a meeting of the national adminis-
trative committee of the American
Jewish Congress held on Tuesday
evening, March 22, at Hotel Com-
modore, New York. A unanimous
vote on the urgency of immediately
invoking the cooperation of the en-
tire community in preventing the
further deterioration of Jewish
rights was reached after hearing
the reports of Dr, Stephen S. Wise,

and one of the outstanding lib-
erals in America. A select
group of Zionist leaders and non-
Jewish friends met with him at
luncheon at the Stotler Hotel and
in the evening he addressed a
Public meeting at Temple Beth
El, under the auspices of the
Zionist Organization of Detroit.
Bent by his 77 years, his shoul-
ders stooping, Mr. Russell, who
is president of the Pro-Palestine
Federation of America — the
movement of Christian friends of
Zionism — nevertheless speaks
with power and conviction. In
spite of his years he is a dynamo
who retains his old strength and
who dominates the Platform.
He spoke with feeling about
the existing conditions and he
was visibly pained by the
spread of the fascistic effort to
"exterminate" the Jewish peo-
ple. Describing with horror
the spread of reaction through-
out Europe, Mr. Russell declar-
ed that the present task facing
the people of this country is to
prevent the spread of reaction
to this country, and that for
the Jaws the way out •of the
terrible situation is first through
Palestine.
Describing the European situ-
ation as pointing to "virtual an-
nihilation of the Jews," Mr. Rus-
sell admonished his Jewish listen-
ers to mobilize for self-help and
to strive speedily to organize for
Palestine's reconstruction.
"I have been looking anxiously
for signs of revolt on the part
of the civilized world against the
'ndescribable horrors and the ex-
'sting intolerable situation," he
deChired..."CrueltY grows by in-

Secretary of State Cordell Hull's proposal for the formation
of a special international committee to deal with the problem of
political refugees has met with wide acclaim throughout the world.
Great Britain, Ecuador, Holland, Belgium and the Scandinavian
countries were first to respond approvingly to the call that went to

are expected to fall in line speedily.
Christian ministers joined with Jewish leaders in their commendations of the

An International News Service
cable from Vienna carries with it
a lesson in pride and dignity as it
is being learned by the unfortunate
Jewish masses in Central Europe.
It is a story of peaceful defiance
and of humility which will some
day cause the non-Jewish world to
beg forgiveness for the sufferings
which are today being heaped upon
a defenseless people; which has, in
fact, already defeated the Nazi
purpose, It describes the call of
Nazi storm troopers at the home
of General Sommer, head of the
Jewish Veterans' Legion, to draft
him for street cleaning, Granted
time to change his clothes, General
Sommer appeared before his would-
be humiliators wearing his full
dress uniform as a high officer i n
the Austrian army and his chest
covered with war medals. To sub-
mit him to the indignity of clean-
ing streets in this regalia meant
an insult to the Austrian army,
and General Sommer was released.
His example was followed by other
prominent Jews who appeared in
their finest clothes and in silk top
hats to do the menial duties in-
tended for them. The gesture had

its intended effect: the Jews were
released, and those who dug a
ditch for others fell therein; those
who intended humiliation for
others were themselves humiliated.
These experiences, added to those
of the early Nazi activities, are
making history. We turn back the
pages of the chronicle of the events
of our time to the issue of April
4, 1933, of the Juedlsche Rund-
schau of Berlin to read that fa-
mous editorial published three days
after the boycott day inaugurated
by the Nazis. Under the title "Wear
It With Pride, the Yellow Badger'
this important periodical discussed
"the moral issue" by declaring
that "Jews cannot speak otherwise
than AS JEWS today. All else is
senseless . , The fatal error of
many Jews that one can defend
Jewish interests under an alien
cloak is exploded." It proceeded
to state that "the lot of April,
1933, can be a day of Jewish
awakening and Jewish rebirth. If
the Jews will it so! If the Jews
have the inner maturity and mag-
namity. If the Jews are NOT as
their enemies represent them. Em-
battled Jewry must affirm itself."
Then followed an expression of
faith which is eternally true in
Jewish life and which must stir
every one who reads it to his in-
nermost depths, especially today:
"That the boycott committee or-
dered shields 'showing on • black
