were ousted from the Vienna Phil-

of Jews from the Austrian stage,

made rapid progress and it is
expected that the purge will be

tended to afford an opportunity
to oust all Jewish instructors and

Freud and Neumann May Settle
in Palestine

JERUSALEM. — (WNS-Palcor
Agency) — The possibility that
Professor Sigmund Freud, distin-
guished Austrian Jewish osycho-
analyst, and Dr. Heinrich Neu-
mann, noted Viennese eye, nose
and throat specialist, both of
whom are under arrest in Vienna,
will settle in Palestine was dis-
closed here when the Jewish
Agency Executive, at the request
of the Jewish medical Association,
promised immigration certificates
to the two scientists imperiled by
the Nazification of Austria.
Indignation w a s widespread
among Jews and liberals because
the swastika, hated symbol of
Hitler, had flown over the King
David Hotel for the first time
since the Nazis came into power
in Germany. The offending ban-
ner was raised in honor of
party of German tourists includ-
ing Oscar Hindenburg, son of the
late President of Germany. The
resentment was intensified be-
cause the luxury hotel is owned
by 90 per cent Jewish capital.

Hitler Denies Duke's Plea

PARIS. — Fuehrer Adolf Hit-
ler Tuesday sent a message to
the Duke of Windsor, politely re-
fusing the Duke's personal plea
for release of Baron Louis Roth-
schild of the famous banking
family who is a Nazi prisoner in
Vienna. The baron was the Duke's
host on several occasions when
Edward visited Austria.
Besieged with pleas for help
from the flood of Jewish refugees
already arrived in Paris, bom-
barded with requests for aid
from the Jewish communities in
Prague and Budapest who have
thus far borne the brunt of the
refugee rush and anticipating a
huge increase in the number of
refugees when Austria ovens its
frontiers, the Joint Distribution
Committee, the World Jewish
Congress, the Jewish Colonization
Association and the Alliance Is-
raelite Universelle are making
extensive plans for coping with
this new problem. All of these
agencies have sent emissaries to
Vienna and Prague to study the
situation at first hand. Among
the prominent refugees who have
reached here are Wolfgang Weisl,
Austrian Revisionist leader, Gina
Kaus, novelist, and the family of
Jacob Lestchinsky, Polish-Jewish
economist.

Special Relief Fund

LONDON. — (WNS) — Lead-
ers of British Jewry are in close
touch with the British govern-
ment concerning the situation in
Austria and have urged the gov-
ernment to intercede with Ger-
many regarding the treatment of
Austrian Jews, Neville Laski,
president, told a meeting of the
Board of Deputies of British
Jews. He also stated that efforts
were being made to arrange for
the admission of a limited num-
ber of Austrian Jews into Eng-
land, but emphasized that too
much cannot be expected. He de-
clared that the most constructive
aid that can be given the Aus-
trian Jews is to raise a special
relief fund.
It is understood that the Brit-
ish government may allow a sub-
stantial number of Austrian Jews
to enter Palestine if a fund of
$500,u00 is raised for their sup-
port. The Rothschilds, Simon
Marks, Lord Bearsted and Israel
Star, who have given large sums
to the Council for German Jewry,
stand ready to make equally gen-
erous contributions to the new
campaign.

Hundreds Injured as

WARSAW. — (WNS) — Two

Killed,

persons were killed, hundreds in-
jured and scores of Jewish shops
looted and wrecked in a two-day
outbreak of anti-Jewish violence
by excited Warsaw crowds cele-
brating the triumph over Lithu-
ania. The trouble began when
hot-headed young Poles, mostly
members of the anti-Semitic Na-
tional Radicals, began pummell-
ing Jews who were lined uo in
front of banks to withdraw their
money in anticipation of war
with Lithuania. Accusing the
Jew. of creating a panic and
shouting "down with the Jews!"
and "Jews to Madagascar!" the
hoodlums were joined by others
when news came that Lithuania
had capitulated to Poland's ulti-
matum. For several hours the
streets of the capital were a vir-
tual battleground with mobs of
anti-Semites assaulting Jews and
fighting the police who blocked
the streets leading to the Jewish
quarter.
The dead included a Christian
child and a Jew, who was beaten
to death while drawing money
from a postofilee bank. Among
the injured were Chief Rabbi
Moses Schorr, member of the Po-
lish Senate. who was attacked as
he was leaving the synagogue to

"THE BROTHERS ASHKENAZI"

AS

The literary and stage sensation—I, Singer's "Brothers Ash-
kenazi"—is coming to Detroit for only two performances, Sunday
matinee and evening, March 27, at th e Wilson Theater.
Advance sales, reported by A. Littman of Littman' ■ People's
Theater, 12th and Seward, who is managing the performance in
Detroit, indicate that the interest that has been current in the play
and in the book during the past 15 months is evidenced also in the
current presentation. It is believed that both performances will
be complete tell-outs.
After six months in New York, at the Yiddish Art Theater,
Maurice Schwartz's production of "Brothers Ashkenazi'—hailed by
its diverse and sundry critics as "the artistic achievement of the
day"—made triumphal visits in Boston, New Haven, Hartford, Mon-
treal and Toronto.
Maurice Schwartz and Samuel Coldenburg portray the title roles
in the stirring, emotional drama, and are assisted by a huge bait
of players. including Kurt Kstsch, Isadore Cashier, Helen Beverley,
Zvee Scooter, Morris Silberkasten, Naum Brind and Morris St -
berg.
The play deals with the intense struggle waged by two ambitious
and warring brothers in the town of Lodz, Poland, who are eager
to attain achievement and recognition in the said community. It
is moreover a tale of two cities, Lodz and St. Petersburg, that are
presently encircled by the lashing vengeance of the Russian Revo-
lution, not to mention the chaotic condition in Europe.
