The lower figure is an estimate by officials of the Jewish community while the larger figure is based on rumors and excited reports by individual Jews and Jewish cemetery caretakers. The large number of suicides is due to the speed and severity with which the Nazis are purging Jews from Austrian life and the inability of most Jews to escape because frontier patrols are not permitting Jews to leave without special exit visas which are virtually unobtainable by Jews. In Germany the Nazis struck at Jewish positions only gradually and in the early years of the regime permitted Jews to leave freely, but in Austria the Nazis are applying the results of a five-year-old technique polished to a high order of efficiency. The only bright spot for Jews on the dark Austrian horizon are the numerous manifestations of sympathy by Austrian Catholics. Jewish leaders are receiving hun- dreds of anonymous typewritten notes bearing the simple words: "from Catholics as Lily Pons Cancels Vienna Appearance Because she does not approve "of what the Nazis arc doing to culture" in Austria, Lily Pons, French Metropolitan Opera soprano, has cancelled her scheduled April' appearance n Vienna, she let it be known during her visit in Detroit last Sunday. "There will be no more fine music, in Vienna-in short time," she said. "The symphony orchestra and the opera com- pany are being put under Nazi control, which in my mind, will very soon completely ruin them. I am not in sympathy with such tactics." Olin expression of sympathy to the persecuted Jews." Some Jews reported seeing aristocratic Catholic women weeping silently at the sight of Nazi storm troop- ers hounding Jews in the streets and forming them to scrub out Schuschnigg slogans in the streets.
