COUNCIL ENDORSES STUDY OF
Announce N. C. J. C.

Religious Service

The same enthusiasm that
characterized the first official
meeting of the Jewish Commu-
nity Council three months ago
was demonstrated again at its
second quarterly meeting held on
Dec. 15, in the United Hebrew
Schools' auditorium.
Simon Shetzer, chairman of
the executive committee, an-
nounced that Isidore Sobeloff,
executive director of the Jewish
Welfare Federation, has been ap-
pointed chairman of the program
committee, charged with the re-
sponsibility of investigating the
feasibility of a community-wide
cultural program. The newly-es-
tablished committee on miscel-
laneous solicitations will be head-
ed by Joseph H. Ehrlich and will
endeavor to survey the solicita-
tions for funds by non-local in-
dividuals and organizations, par-
ticularly those on behalf of
European and Palestinian insti-
tutions. The personnel of both
these committees will be an-
nounced next week.
Members of the Council voted
to extend their fullest co-ooera-
tion to the committee from the
University of Michigan which is
studying the occupational distri-
bution of Detroit Jews. Their
survey is one of a series of simi-
lar investigations being under-
taken in various Jewish commu-
nities throughout the country in
an effort to learn the kinds of
work in which Jews engage and
the number in each field.
With the admission of the
Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute,
the president announced that the
council now has a membership of
164 organizations.

crimination Committees

the Council and also member or-
ganizations in order to inform
them of the aims and activities
of the Council. A recommenda-
tion was made by this commit-
tee that a research bureau be
established for the purpose of
gathering facts about the De-
troit Jewish community.,
James I. Ellmann reported that
a survey by his committee indi-
cated severe discrimination
against the employment of Jews,
especially in "white-collar" jobs.
At least half of the employers
calling for help through employ:
ment agencies are unwilling or
reluctant to hire Jews, Mr. Ell-
mann said. In many instances,
both personnel managers and
employment agencies stimulate or
create discrimination. The com-
mittee has established the means
for handling specific complaints
on rental or employment discrim-
ination. Complaints may be
made at the office of the Council,
51 W. Warren, Columbia 1600.
All information will be held in
strictest confidence, and the facts
will be turned over to this com-
mittee for consideration and ac-
tion. A number of complaints
have already been received.

Report of Arbitration Committee

Judge Charles Rubiner sum-
marized the progress of the ar-
bitration committee which is de-
veloping plans for a court of ar-
bitration where Jewish disputes
may be settled in a friendly man-
ner. It was decided that the
scope of the arbitration would be
"to consider all matters submitted,
wherein at least one party is Jew-
ish." However, "in employer and
employee relationships, no arbi-
tration is to take place unless re-
quested by all parties." Specific
rules and regulations are being
formulated by a sub-committee
under the chairmanship of Mor-
ris Garvett.
A resume of the activities of
the League for Human Rights was
presented by Mrs. S. Schaflander,
secretary.
The next quarterly meeting of
the Jewish Community Council
will be held on Wednesday eve-
ning, March 2, at the Jewish Com-
munity C e n t e r. Organizations
are requested to take note of the
date and to refrain from sched-
uling any conflicting activities.
On Sunday, Dec. 26, at 12:45
p. m., Harold Silver will speak
on the work of the Jewish Com-
munity Council on Altman's Jew-
ish Hour, over Station WMBC.

Chronicle to Publish News of Con-
ference of Jews and
Christians

The N.C.J.C. News Service, to
which The Detroit Jewish Chron-
icle is a subscriber, will henceforth
be known as Religious News Serv-
ice, it was announced by Dr. Rob-
ert A. Ashworth, editor. The serv-
ice will continue to be operated by
the National Conference of Jews
and Christians, with headquarters
at 300 Fourth Ave., New York
City.
Dr. Ashworth also made public
endorsements of the change of
name from leading religious lead-
em.
Rabbi Max C. Currick, president
of the Central Conference of
American Rabbis, said: "Back of
the N.C.J.C. and its news service
is the encouraging realization of
an ever growing part of the Amer-
ican people of the common aims
and ideals, and the opportunities
for cooperation, of all religious
groups. The new name Religious
News Service, reflects the appreci-
ation of this factor."
The National Conference of
Jews and Christians is a nation-
wide organization of Protestants,
Catholics and Jews. Co-ahairman
are Hon. Newton D, Baker, Prof.
Carlton J. H, Hayes of Columbia
University, and Roger W. Straus
of New York. It established its
news service four years ago. The
service is widely endorsed by
Protestant, Catholic and Jewish
religious leaders.
