Detroit Symphony Society to
Give First Performance of
Orchestral Capriccioso

A first performance In the
United States of a work by a con-
temporary composer, as well as
first performances in Detroit of
two other compositions will be fea-
tured at the fifth subscription con-
cert by the Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra In Orchestra Hall, Thurs-
day night, Dec. 16. Victor Kollar
will be the conductor, making his
first appearance of the season in
the Thursday night series,
Orchestral Capriccioso is the
title of the work to receive its
American premiere, This ex-
tremely brief piece for full orches-1
tra by Boris Blacher, 34-year-old
German is one of the several com-
positions brought back from Eu-
rope earlier this year by Kolar.
This caprice is said to be of un-
usual interest, ably orchestrated,
and a work that easily could meet
the requirements of the classic
Russian ballet. It possesses a taste
of the East and involuntarily re-
minds one of Stravinsky's earlier
writings, particularly "Petrouch-
ka."
