relmohn Itortholdy was an out-

standing member...

The author died in Novem-
ber, 1936. Ile was a descen-
dant of Moses 51endelssohn,
grandson of the composer Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy and a
son of the historian Karl Men-
delssohn Bartholdy. Ile was
chosen to represent Germany on
the Arbitral Tribunal at The
Hague in connection with the
administration of the Young
Plan. Ile had been honored by
many universities, including
Ilarvard University from whom
he received the honorary de-
gree of Doctor of Laws. He
was forced by persecutions to
leave Germany in 1933. Balliol
College, Oxford, created a lec-
tureship for him. Ile was for-
merly director of the Institut
fuer Auswnertige Politik at
Hamburg.

In his introduction, Prof.
Mendelssohn Bartholdy states
that this volume merely at-
tempts to open the windows of
a sick room and to give free
access to the open air. He
gives an analysis of the sta-
tus of German society which
justifies the labelling of this
book as a brilliant resume of
Germany's conditions in the
pre- and post-war periods.
The attitude of the rich,
for whom things somehow
worked out satisfactorily, is
contrasted with that of the
poor, who are the real suffer-
ers in the war. But, "still it
can be said that among the
more important truths in the
sphere of the social effects of
the war is the fact that, as a
consequence of the attitude of
a large section of the 'upper
middle classes,' the war over-
reached itself financially . . .
They had tried, during the war,
to eat the cake, and to have
it, too."

Louis Zara's New Novel Is •
Splendid Picture of American
Political Life, Aspiration

Louis Zara, 27-year-old Chicago
Jewish writer, former linotype
man, now has three novels to his
credit, and each of them is a
splendid piece of writing. His
first, "Blessed Is the Man," a
story about a Jewish immigrant
and his family, his rise in the com-
mercial field and the manner in
which his children and grandchil-
dren spread into different fields
of endeavor, was rated among the
Nation's 50 notable books of 1935.
His second novel, "Give Us This
Day," also received a fine recep-
tion, Now comes his third novel
from the press of Bobbs-Merrill
Co., Indianapolis, under the title
"Some for the Glory" ($2.75). In
a sense this is his best work be-
cause it covers so understandingly
and in so human a fashion the
political field which has been so
little touched in fiction.
"Homo politicos Americanus" is
the hero of this story. In this in-
stance it is Michael Hawks, and
orphan who became the distribu-
tor of campaign literature for the
"big boss," John Stacy. A cheap
watch flattered him. But the work
Itself also fascinated him. He
learned to know a lot of people,
made a lot of friends, acquired the
gift of bargain-making in politics.
Ile soon won the committeeman's
post, then went to the legislature,
rose to the mayor's post, gained
greater ambitions, ran for gover-
nor, was elected.
As his state's favorite son he
became a candidate for the Presi-
dency and made a marvellous run.
Not until the last moment did it
become apparent that he lost to
the incumbent by only a dozen
electoral votes. There is disap-
pointment in the family—there are
tears in the eyes of his wife,
shrewd Elizabeth. But they begin,
with the encouragement of their
friends, to look ahead four years
hence.
For Michael it is a labor of love
as much as for the personal profit
that politics brings. The "big
boss" had been warning, "there is
always a man to work for the
glory, but it don't buy him kraut
for the sausages!" But for Michael
Hawks much of his efforts was for
the glory. It was during a political
campaign that word is flashed to
him, "there will be kraut for the
sausages, and some for the glory."
This is really the theme of the
novel the dedicatory page of which
quotes from the Rubaiyat of
Omar Khayyam:
"som e for the Glories of OM World;

Perhaps the enthusiasm of youth
for the present Nazi regime may
be explained by the following
concluding thought expressed in
