the year the man would have
bought a Christmas tree—for his
children and for his maid ser-
vant. This seemed to him mod-
ern and patriotic. Finally. he
lived among non-Jews. This time,
however, he bethought himself of
that miraculous event when in
167 the priest Mattathis with his
five sons rose up against the Sy-
rian terroristic government and
defended Jewish culture against
the inroads of Hellenism. He
went into an old store of the
ghetto quarter and bought him-
self a Menorah. Holding the
nine-branched candlestick in his
hands for the first time, a rush of
memories assailed him. Ile re-
membered the home of his grand-
parents, something old yet new,
a sense of the oast overcame him
and tears streamed from his eyes.
The first light was kindled, and
the man told his wife and his
children the story of the Mac-
cabeana. He recounted the mir-
acle which is said to have oc-
curred during the rededication of
the Temple: When the perpetual
lamp was about to be lit. there
was; found only one cruse con-
taining sufficient oil for one day,
but it lasted for eight days. the
time required for the preparation
of fresh oil.
The second night the second
candle was lit, and this time the
children repeated to their parents
what their father had told them.
And husband and wife listened to
their children tell the story and
rejoiced. Light after light rose
up, and every night the man

The man had thought that with
that confession he had done some-

Again there resounds the cry
of hatred, and in the whole wide
world there are no people more
despairing than the Jews. And
yet there are some in Israel who
still sleep quietly, who at their
morning coffee state that there are
only a few Polish and Rumanian
villages in which houses are de-
molished, stores plundered. and
Jews killed. "There are accidents
somewhere else too," they console
themselves and continue their
reading the paper. There are not
very many, fortunately, who lack
the feeling of Jewish solidarity,
who are indifferent to the fact
that there are thousands of Jew-
ish girls from Germany and the
East who prowl the streets of
Paris as prostitutes, that the pur-
ity of Jewish family life has been
destroyed, that ten thousands of
Jewish children hunger and freeze.
There are only a few. But let
them beware. Anti-Semitism is a
disease that is contagious. Today
it destroys the mud-huts. tomor.
row it may penetrate into the
palaces—unless all Jews, poor and
rich, unite to fight the disease.
