Salem Miller of Toronto Writes

on Jewish Humor and Compiles
Excellent Stories

N'M YIDDISIIIN KVAL. (The Gist of Jewish Jett). A

Classified Compilation of Jealth Humorous Stories, With

Interpretations. Published by Dos liddlthe Wort, Win-

niPei• On hale by Author at 420 Meridiem Ave., Tor-
onto, Ontario. ($2).

A number of books were published in recent
years on the subject of Jewish humor. Cgotzner,
Richman and Mendelsohn have made interesting
comment on Jewish wit, and have compiled valu-
able stories to illustrate their commentaries.
But the best volume on the subject has appeared
recently in Yiddish. Salem Miller's "Fun'm Yid-
dishn Kval" is without doubt the outstanding work
on the subject. It is the work not only of an
able compiler and classifier, but the result of a
deep understanding of the subject that comes from
deep-rooted knowledge of Jewish lore, the He-
brew language and culture. The author is steeped
in traditional Jewish learning, and in addition has
been trained in modern universities, holding the
B. A. and LL. B. degrees. The result of his efforts
supersedes those of previous compilers because he
has been able to combine excellently the two qual-
ities of possessing a background of Old World
training together with an understanding of the
humor that is extant in our own day in this coun-
try.
A study of the classification of the stories will
reveal at once the importance of the entire volume
in which are included many hundreds of stories.
As the author points out in his foreword, the
classifying is based on psychological factors as
well as cultural-historical ideologies. Every chap-
ter is preceded by an explanatory note, or set of
notes, in which the particular subject covered is
analyzed from the point of view of Jewish his,
torical experiences and the trends of different per-
iods in our history which influenced the particular
type of wit or humor.

BEHIND THE NEWS
Despite the seeming calm in
Washington Uncle Sam is plenty
worried over the establishment of
a Fascist State in Brazil,
The State Department has its
fingers crossed against the thought
that other Latin-American repub-
lics may follow that example .
And just for record's sake it ought
to be noted that all but five of
20 Latin-American countries are
complete or quasi-dictatorships...
One of the strange paradoxes of
the Brazilian fascist set-up is that
Dictator Getulio Vargas has long
been a personal enemy of Plinio
Salgado, fuehrer of the anti-Sem-
itic Fascist Integrilista Party ...
Vargas has openly supported the
Italian fascists in Brazil, but has
turned a cold shoulder on the Nazi
propagandists who are financing
Salgado . • As a result of the
Brazilian coup all American diplo-
matic officials in Latin America
are reported to have been given
orders to make an immediate sur-
vey of the extent of Nazi and
fascist activities in the countries
to which they are accredited .
To counteract fascist sentiment
south of the Rio Grande, Uncle
Sam will soon launch his own radio
station, to make direct Spanish
and Portuguese broadcasts to
Latin America , This by way
of a counter-attraction to the pro-
fascist and pro-Nazi programs
heard in South and Central Amer-
ica from Rome and Berlin.
WHAT HAPPENS HERE
We have seen evidence which
leads us to believe that Baron
Manfred von Killinger, Nazi con-
sul-general in San Francisco, not
only is the chief of Nazi propa-
ganda on the Pacific Coast, but
pulls the wires that control Nazi
doings in Mexico and Canada
Killinger, we are informed, won
the Pacific Coast job on the
strength of his "achievement" as
a member of the court that imposed
the death sentence on lielmuth
Hirsch, the naturalized American
Jew whom the Nazis beheaded in
June . Any day now the Con-
gressional Record will publish a
list of a 100 names of pro-Nazi
agents on the Pacific Coast linked
to Killinger . , And in conse-
quence of this expose the State
Department may ask for his re-
call.

PURELY COMMENTARY

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

Execration of a Name

Alfred M. Cohen of Cincinnati, president of the
international order of Bnai Brith, told his Detroit
audience at the 80th anniversary-celebration of
Pisgah Lodge: "Bnai Brith will return to Germany
after Hitler's name will be universally execrated."
It would be well if we could continue to father
thoughts based on this wish. But there is another
viewpoint, expressed by men who have a right to
claim that they speak authoritatively on the Ger-
man situation. Dr. Joachim Prinz, for 10 years a
rabbi in Berlin, is one of them. Not so long ago
he warned that the last chapter of German-Jewish
history is now being written, and that this chapter
will be completed in the next 10 years. He main-
tained that the facts in the case are plain and
that "the National Socialist government is in to
stay because it truly represents the will and char-
acter of the German people." Ile added: "It is
nonsense to deny that Adolf Hitler is admired and
loved by the overwhelming majority of the Ger-
man nation. And as long as the great power
system continues to exist as it does, every con-
dition will favor the continuance of the National
Socialist regime. The position taken by the Ger-
man government can have but one meaning: the
ultimate dissolution of Jewish life in Germany."
It takes a great deal of courage for a refugee
German-Jewish leader who propagates the cause
of a Jewishly-redeemed Palestine to utter such
views. But Jews will act ostrich-like if they re-
fuse to face facts as they are. Dr. Prinz has
spoken as a realist and outlined conditions as he
sees them. We accept his opinion as a realistic
statement that must not only be respected but
must also be accepted on the strength of evidence
that is piling up in its favor throughout the world.
Adolf Hitler is stronger today than he has been
ever before. To play with a wish-psychology that
he will soon be relegated to oblivion and that his
name will be "universally execrated" is to be false
to reality. The head of the German government
is a power whose ideas threaten to invade every
corner of the globe. It may be easier to approach
a method of combatting Nazi ideas in democratic
countries if the truth with regard to conditions in
Germany is faced frankly and realistically.

We are on the eve of the great Festival
of the Maccabees which will be observed
this year beginning with Sunday night,
Nov. 28. Once more Jews throughout the
world will observe—for the 2102nd time
—the victories of the great heroes whose
successes record the fact that Jews were
not merely a great' spiritual people, but
also a nation that knew how to defend its
honor.
