POWATAN CLUB TE . 2-8385 124 DAVENPORT Schavers Describe ORCHESTRA HALL SAT., NOV. 20 European Conditions Return From Four-Month Tour of Europe; Visited Six Countries Mr. and Mrs. Morris Schaver (Emma Lazaroff) returned this week from a four-month tour of European countries and a six- week stay in Poland. In the course of their travels they visited in Switzerland, Belgium, France, Austria and Czechoslovakia, in ad- dition to Poland. I Their tour started by attending the World Zionist Congress at Zurich, at which Mr. Scheyer was one of the American labor dele- gates, Describing the horrors that dominate Jewish life in Poland and other European lands, the Schavers state that Csechoslo- vakia and Belgium were like oases in the desert. The former espe cially was described by them as the happiest land they visited. I Mr. Scheyer drew a parallel between what was once gay Vi- enna and the Czechoslovakian capital of Prague. The former he said, is a dreary and gloomy place, and underneath every coun- tenance is to be detected fear and despair. Prague, on the other hand, is a happy place that teems with life. Referring to their experiences in Warsaw where they spent the High Holy Day period, Mr. and Mrs. Schaller said that the reli- gious fervor in that country is the best proof that the backbone of Jusdism is still to be found in Poland. Mrs. Scheyer appeared at a concert In Warsaw and was hail- ed as one of the greatest artists and inteureters of Jewish songs ever to be heard in the Polish capital. So phenomenal was her triumph that she received calls from Vilna, Kovno, Lodz, Lem- berg and other communities, in- viting her to appear in concerts. But the Schavers decided to re- turn to America and the invita- tions were- therefore rejected. Mrs. Scheyer, immediately upon her return here, received dozens of calls to appear in concerts. Her first appearance in this country this season will be in St. Louis on Nov. 21. She is also scheduled to give concerts in December, January and February in Wash- ington, D. C., Philadelphia, Provi- dence, Cleveland and other com- munities. Pontiac Notts An exchange of pulpit. brought to Temple Beth Jacob of Pontiac on Nov. 6 Rabbi Chariest B.
